I can’t believe a medical provider asked about guns in my house

Have you ever seen a lifeless kid pulled from the ocean, drowned? Have you ever seen a lifeless kid pulled from a car wreck because a texting teenager hit the parents' vehicle head on? Have you ever seen a lifeless young man dead from alcohol poisoning due to fraternity hazing? I didn't get over those, or any other such scenes.

Should people be subjected to questions about whether they have a pool, or bathtub, or swim in the ocean? How about questioning if there are mobile devices in use in the house, or do teenagers live on their street? Should people be subjected to interrogation about if their children will go to college, and if so, join a fraternity?

The over-reach is the issue. It is a ceaseless quest for control, and is steadily eroding liberty and the quality of life in the USA.
I agree with this statement but also working fire department for so many years you could add a woman putting on makeup while on the way to work (or anywhere else), "so sir, does your wife wait until she is driving to put on makeup?" Oh, and the list goes on and on.

Every pediatrician is going to ask about pools. Every primary care doctor should be asking about alcohol use. Asking about guns is just another screening question, it’s not political and it’s not some sinister plot. Flipping out isn’t going to help anything.

My Doc knows i'm a competitive shooter and big game hunter, he also hunts Deer.

Bottom line - it is none of their business. This tells me the gov't and those asking do not trust you to make your own decisions on how you and your family wish to live your life. Really disingenuous of gov't to demonize guns and alcohol and then enact more liberal laws permitting other activities that create societal problems like drugs, civil disobedience, illegal immigration, gambling. Will they begin asking questions about those newly deemed acceptable activities- NO- in some cases it would be illegal to ask.

I’m all for privacy but crazy people need to be kept in check some way.

Ha… I like that statement.

HIPAA keeps my employer from disclosing to me just which new employee - who I may often share a phone and keyboard with - had just received a diagnosis of acute infectious hepatitis.

My only caveat to your statement is that ‘crazy’ or ‘normal’ often depends on which side of the muzzle (or signature line) you happen to be on at a particular moment in time.

I’m lucky. My doc asks about guns but it’s usually around what he should get next or how the heck did I manage buying another, without my wife knowing.

My old Pakistani woman doctor ask if I had any "weapon" In the house.
I said I have a bunch of kitchen knives, an axe, baseball bat, rope (for the occasional lynching) rocks sticks..... at this point she said stop stop.
I got a new dr who is an old white man and the brother in law of my hunting friend.

I don’t normally post stuff like this but my mother lives with us and during a recent follow up call from her medical provider they asked a number of questions that have now become pretty standard. Questions such as do you feel safe in the house, do you feel depressed or lonely but a new question that has been added is a very direct one asking if she owns a gun or has guns in the house. WTF business of it is theirs.
This came in under the 08-16 administration and one of the several public shooting of the time. It’s NUNYA as far as I can tell.

Fortunately I won a state championship last year so I tell them I'm a competitive shooter and then tell them I won the state championship and it would be impolite of them to say anything except "Congrtulations." you do have a choice to control their response. --Jerry

Geez I actually had the opposite. My primary care Dr. sends out a monthly letter covering all kinds of things generally, how to stay safe and protect your health . This time he questioned if you had a gun in your house and knew how to use it to protect yourself!
Wasn’t saying you should but certainly didn’t think it was a bad idea in these times

This started with the CDC a long time ago, and Obama embraced it in the "ACA". AFAIK, though, no one has disputed the charges if the question is not asked.

The ultimate tragedy, though, is that rather than focusing on your specific medical problems, and doing a careful physical exam, a lot of providers just look at the computer and check off boxes, and yeah, a certain number of those boxes are required in order to send a bill. Very different from the way we were taught to diagnose and treat by actually focusing on the patient.

That's why it was sad that when Trump was elected the Rs didn't have a plan ready on day 1 to replace the ACA. They had 8 years to get it ready, but chose to just rail about Obama NoCare rather than go on offense.
