I can’t believe a medical provider asked about guns in my house

I don't care if it is required or not. Any doctor asking that has a choice, a choice to ask pertinent questions only or to collect information for Big Brother.
I don't go to the doctor, but if any doctor I saw asked that, it would be the last time I used his services.
Yea the choice of loosing his or her license, if you don’t want to answer then don’t however don’t take it personal. They didn’t make the rules, simply following them.. For what it’s worth I’d tell them to go to hell if they asked me but I wouldn’t take it personal, at least not after my blood pressure settled down lol.

I don’t normally post stuff like this but my mother lives with us and during a recent follow up call from her medical provider they asked a number of questions that have now become pretty standard. Questions such as do you feel safe in the house, do you feel depressed or lonely but a new question that has been added is a very direct one asking if she owns a gun or has guns in the house. WTF business of it is theirs.
another reference (from 2013):

My doc has never asked....

When you take a new born to a Pediatrician, they are required to ask about guns in the home. If you say yes, they will hand you a statement to reinforce keeping guns out of the reach of children.

If you have ever seen a small child with his guts wide open and a nice hole in his back from an unloaded gun, You will never get over it.

Many doctors are conservative and believe in the 2nd Amendment but have lost patients to careless gun handling. If a doctors inquiry makes you think about how you safeguard your guns, you should thank him. He may have just saved your son or daughters life. The time to become irate, is if the doctor starts berating you about gun ownership.

That's my opinion.

From what I've found the ACA:
* Does not require the doctor to ask.
* Does not forbid the doctor to ask.

ACA also has this specific language:

‘‘(5) LIMITATION ON DATA COLLECTION REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIVIDUALS.—No individual shall be required to disclose any information under any data collection activity authorized under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or an amendment made by that Act relating to—
‘‘(A) the lawful ownership or possession of a firearm or ammunition; or
‘‘(B) the lawful use, possession, or storage of a firearm or ammunition.

I remember being asked once a LONG time ago - like 15 years ago. That's the one and only time I've been asked - and I've had about 4 different doctors since that time.

Well John when I lived there I was asked that question, told them in no uncertain terms it was none of there business and not to ask me again. Since I have moved the question has never come up in six visits to Doctors. Just say no.

Its part if red flag laws enacted during that dismal years of obummer. There were veterans guns being confiscated because they answered a few questions the wrong way. One question had to do with needing help with financial stuff.

Anytime anyone asks me something stupid that i feel is intrusive, ill just ask them a random off the wall question that is obviously meant to let them know i dont enjoy the verbal prodding.

The down of getting offensive at the firearms question is that they more or less know you do by your smart ass reply.

My current doc is a Army Combat Veteran.
Have not had any issues whatsoever with him.

I've been with the same GP Doctor for 16 years. He is a very good Doctor whom I respect very much. During the Obama years and ACA he said he had a new guestionaire that need to be completed. One of the questions was do I have any firearms in the house. He knew I did because we sometimes discussed shooting and different competitions. I ask why that question was on the form. He said they did not know, they only completed the form. I politely told him I would prefer to not answer any questions on the form. He said he understood and never ask again.

Last year I went for a checkup and the assistant said she had a new questionaire to be be completed. OK, no problem. The third question was "are you happy, all the time, most of the time, some of the time, none of the time". I wanted to answer the questions truthfully because I thought it might be to check for symptoms that might indicate medical issues that needed to be checked. I answered "most of the time". Being 65 I have various aches and pains, typical issues for my age. That answer led to more invasive questions so I stopped for a few seconds and then ask her to start over with number 1. From that that point on I became the most healthy, happy, and active 65 year old they have ever seen.

The times are changing for sure when you can't talk to your doctor because you fear where your information is going.

Required by law, so don't hassle the doctors. Most hate it too. My doctor asks every year at my physical and then snickers. I do too, since she is a shooter whose graduation present was a fully tricked out Kimber. 45.
I see from your avatar your from Illinois. I'm from there too and have never had a doctor ask me that and have not heard of any law requiring them to ask. When was this law passed?

They are asking because, they want to know if you start saying things during a visit that may send red flags up in their thinking they may just prevent another mass shooting. will it work? don't know but if anyone who posted to this thread doesn't understand that we have a major mental health issue and people who shouldn't have guns are getting them and well you seen the results on the news!
They want to take away our guns because it is the easiest way in their thinking to prevent the mass shootings, but what they don't understand, it won't solve the problem which is a mental health crisis not guns, because if not guns , then knives, vehicles, arson, etc. those that are mentally damaged will find a way. notice the last shooting where the feds investigated and took away a gun from the shooter, he still got his hands on guns and ended up doing what his damaged mind for some reason wanted to do, even with him already flagged he still was able to do it. the saddest thing is how the media all of a sudden lost interest in finding out why it still happen. they only want to look at what was used and not why it was used, a damaged person with mental health issues again to hard and costly to prevent and help those who need it.
until they can identify these damaged minds it will keep happening and we as gun owners will pay the price.
