I Can Relate -- Hearing Loss Issues

Wife says your hearing is getting really bad, as she talks the other way into the cupboards.

Conversation over when you offer to make hearing appointments for Both of you....
I know how that is, my wife will look out the passenger window, as we are driving, and then ask a question ,then turn and look at me for my response! When I ask her what? She repeats her question but quieter this time, and then when I again ask "what did you say" she says "oh forget it".

On the other hand my Tinnitus has been so bad lately the other day we walked into the house a while back and I told my wife "great the dam smoke alarms need new batteries again, I just changed them about six months ago" she says "what are you taking about they are not chirping" I said " yes they are can't you hear them, in fact its the first time I have ever heard them chirp that much, they sound like birds"

Its been none stop 24- 7 for the last month. I have never really heard chirping before, lots of ringing, constant buzzing, sometimes both like a jet engine but this is a first for chirping. Shoot now I know why those smoke detecters would drive me crazy when changing the battery, I have about a 12 in my house and when I would change the battery in the one my wife or daughter was chirping I would swear I still heard one chirping and would end up pulling them all down. It drove me nuts. Now I know why. LOL

I have tinnitus too. I've had it for about 25 years. I got it from working in server rooms and around computers. Mine is a constant hiss. I've learned to tune it out. My hearing was still normal. I used to get it tested once a year at work. I haven't had it tested in a few years. I should probably do that.

Lot's of earaches when young. Hole in eardrum...4F for military physical...BS...Flunked first hearing test in first grade. Worked around equipment most of my life. Always wore hearing protection. Double plugged when competiting for 20 years. Tinnitus has been forever. Ignore it. Had hearing aids, screw it. Talk to me, not to the window, or the cupboard, or repeat it.

Have the chirping, squealing, etc since Army days (of course)...so 55+ years of it now.
Last year I had one of my 6 monthly ear wax suction 'clean out' appointments. Works great and helps with the hearing. Highly recommend this.
But went to a nearer clinic that had just started up as my normal one was booked up for weeks ahead...'what could possibly go wrong'?
The female operator was quick (rough as guts quick), and sent me on my way. Ears hurt for the next couple of days which is not normal. Then I also noticed a weird 'chirping' going on.
Just moving my head would make the sound appear.
Managed to get an appointment at my usual clinic and they found that the previous rough as guts job had pushed a hair (in my ear canal) down onto the diaphragm of the ear. So it was sort of like scratching a record player needle across an LP. Scritch, scratch, squeak, chirp, etc.
If you have been poking at your ear with cotton buds, match sticks, etc then you may have shoved a hair down onto the diaphragm too.
Worth having it looked at, and maybe get a wax suction job at the same time.

Yup I have had mine for over 45 years, as a kid me and my cousin were at the gun range without hearing protection watching a guy shoot a Contender in 30-30 and I think 35 Rem. Then we were shooting and since our ears were already ringing we didn't use hearing protection. Then with all the loud music growing up. Many years and thousands of rounds of semi and full auto in close quarters with 5 man team engaging.
Its hard to remember a time my ears haven't range or buzzed, its just some days are worse than others. My dad always made me wear hearing protection wether shooting or running chain saws and such but all as it took was that one time.

I tell my wife this at least 10-15 times a week or more.

Hearing aid technology keeps getting better. It took me a long time to go in an get some aids as I just didn't want to bother and expected people to speak up when speaking to me. But, eventually my wife convinced me, after plenty of nagging, to get some aids as the VA would provide me with them, so it wasn't the cost that held me back. When I got that first set of aids definitely improved not only my hearing of speech, but also watching TV or listening to other sources, like my phone, thanks to bluetooth streaming devises that connect to my aids.

This year, after the previous set I had for a few years, I got another new set of aids and they're GREAT! I can hear details in music I haven't heard in a long, long time; I can discern direction that sounds are coming from, which I couldn't with previous aids; I can hear much better in noisy restaurant environments; people say I'm not talking too loud any more like I often did and and talking at normal volume. . . .especially in noisy environments.

The aids I have is from Resound and I have behind the ear aids that has a receiver with a rubber dome on it. These aid have a receiver larger and more powerful than previous aids, which really helps with a wider range of sound for music and other sounds. The unique thing about these aids I've got is that not only is there microphones on the aid behind the hear like most aids have had in the past, but there's a mic in the receiver that's in the ear. That mic inside the ear is using one's outer earn function to handle sound like a sound is handles with normal hearing. This is what allows one to discern what direction sound is coming from (I'm sure there's an algorithm that assists with that too). The aid is controlled by a phone app and this aid allows one to answer and talk on a phone call without having to pick up the smart phone (if one has an Apple phone or Pixel phone). And it's nice to not to have to bother with constant battery replacement, as the aid are rechargeable. The bluetooth connection with phone and streaming devises sure makes hearing things a real pleasure again . . . even with my constant tinnitus.

If you're struggling with your hearing and not doing something about it, you're really missing out on what today's technology can do. If it's a cost issue, Costco has very good aids and at very reasonable prices. Costco even sells the aids I got through the VA.

Bought a new to me cabbed tractor a couple years ago, had it for a few weeks then one day after shutting it off a warning buzzer went off and wouldn't quit. I made sure the key wasn't left on then called the dealer and told them there is a buzzer going off in the control console.

They replied that there isn't a warning buzzer in the console. Well it must be coming from the dash then I thought, nope it's coming from the console area. Then I remembered I've had 24/7, 365 Tinnitus for a couple decades. So I have my wife check for buzzer. Nope, no buzzer, it was my Tinnitus.
