Hearing test

DOS XX,

My analog aids were made by General Hearing Instruments Inc.
However, you may have a hard time finding a dispenser that is tooled up for analog aids. But, it is very easy for them even if they haven't tried it before. All they have to do is send the patient's
audiogram as well as some specifics like the geometry of the aid(behind the ear, receiver in the ear or sound tube to the ear or in the ear aids. Also, with or without volume wheel and with or without directional microphones)
I prefer aids without volume wheels as it allows the wearer to adjust too far away from the prescription for that person.

I have had tinnitus for years from the same culprits you named Benjamin. However in the last couple of years, I find it more difficult to understand what people are saying unless I can see there mouth move then take what I hear and see and do the math so to speak.
I know it irritates the better half almost as much as it does me.

I suffer from the same ailment, on top of my diminished hearing. Back when the kids (daughters) were still home, they and my wife would always accuse me of not paying any attention to what they were saying. I'd tell them that I couldn't hear what they were saying, but of course no one would believe me until I brought home a hearing test from work. The higher the number the more hearing loss you have according to the test they gave us. Mine was full of 50s, 60s, clear up to and including a few 70s, my wife had a similar test at her place of employment and the highest number she registered was 15. My physician was also privy to my test results, and I told him what the family was always complaining about and he said that the majority of my hearing loss was in the octave/frequency range that womens voices generally fall into, so now they finally believed me.
Back when I was younger if your ears weren't bleeding, the music wasn't loud enough. That and years of loud machinery, loud cars and loud guns, I can't hear much of anything anymore. With the tinnitus on top of my poor hearing, background noise is what makes understanding people in even small groups almost impossible.

At 70dB, you are approaching a severe loss. My right ear is 100+, which is a profound loss, and I am deaf in my left ear. If you are not wearing hearing aids, you really should be. There could be underlying problems causing the tinnitus, such as TMJ or other teeth problems.

Edit: Something to consider is this; Those of us with hearing loss have to work harder, using more concentration. Even with a mild loss, speech becomes degraded and our brain has to work harder to understand. When our brain uses more energy to focus on one thing, that energy is taken away from somewhere else, and increases our effort being used for working memory. At the end of the day, we are more tired than those without hearing loss due to working harder to concentrate on conversation. Untreated hearing loss can quickly lead to social isolation and depression. See an Audiologist and get fitted for hearing aids. You'll live a better life, your family and friends won't accuse you of not listening to them, and they will not have to deal with you raising your voice for you to hear yourself talk.

almost 5 yrs since last post. i am at a point i've got to do something, any new updates in technology? is cosco still the best place?
thanks

Cosco is a very viable place. My first hearing aids were about 4000 grand, my second 7000, my third 6000 after I insisted the pricing is too high to my audiologist, she said she came me a downgraded pair. During Trumps administration, things were changed to start in the future. Somehow Biden's administration has cleared the prescription hurdle and online hearing aids are starting to come available.
I am involved with technologicaI stuff and its beyond me why hearing aids are so pricey with the advent of cell phones and even small devices carry a processor somehow. I always figured Apple or Bose would jump in this business and market affordable hearing aids to everyone, including kids that don't need them, because so many people are wearing ear buds and the advancements in hearing aids include bluetooth now so you can transmit your phone and music straight to your ears.
After losing one more earring aid (of the 6000 set) I was told I could replace the single for 2000. I grit my teeth and joined Costco. But due to Colorado's insistence that COVID is still an issue, my appointment was about 2 months out, after getting one. Then a Lifely (now Jabra enhance) ad showed up, probably on facebook, that was selling hearing aids for $1200 for the pair with all the warrantys and support I got from the audiologist. They take a audiogram online and program from there and ship with a 100 day return policy. I had a one on one with a Lively agent (audiologist) discussing programming and any changes are made via the magic of the internet, utilizing your app on a cell phone. They seem very similar to what I had, including manufacturer and they give you batteries, ear mould replacements and wax control stuff. I have been happy but kept my appointment with Costco down the line. They gave me the whole works consistent with any testing I had taken, then programmed a set on the spot and let me try during the appointment with a $1600 price tag for the pair. They may have been a little better but at this level its hard to tell. I declined the Costco's hearing aids in that I was happy with the online ones. Costco guy told me that the online ones simply amplifiers but in reality, so are theirs, so I figure BS on that statement.
So I am a happy camper at the $1200 level and I still use the batterys because I despise chargers and I don't want to carry a charger everywhere I go and if I go hunting, chargers are out. Batteries aren't that expensive and I buy 100 at a time so a pack goes in each car, with my wife, my shooting gear, and my hunting gear.

using Phonak hearing aid in the left ear. with a Phonak com-pilot to be able to converse on the phone. just completed a Cochlear implant on the right side 4 weeks ago and they just activated it monday.. i can not hear with it yet.. they say it could take as long as a year.. but i can feel the impulses from the signal input from it. The hearing aid battery in it lasts about 2 weeks (13+) but the Cochlear batteries they say should last about 16 hours per charge. we'll see..

See a real doctor Audiologist is Gipsy for" hearing aid sales person".
True, but a real doctor will send you to an audiologist for the hearing test, then base any prognosis or treatment in part on the test results. If you find an MD who gives comprehensive hearing tests, let us know.

Doug they will help reduce that background noise. I am not a audiologist, I just have one in each ear. Started out with one about 12 years ago at the age of 46 and now have two.
