I am confused.

Need help on what might be a non-issue. I was under the opinion that when someone posts something for sale, and you say "I'll take it" that the observed protocol is the item is locked up until the original buyer backs out. I was on a different forum. Guy posts an item I wanted and the price was great. I responded with "I'll take it". He didn't give me a paypal address so I went out for about an hour. I get back and he says it was first come first sold and another guy wanted it too. Ok, I can live without it, but the question I have is this: Is there an accepted protocol on these sales or is it a free for all? I know it can all depend on the seller and the forum etc, but jeeze.

It's pretty much a free for all. Some seem to think you have nothing else to do other than sit in front on the computer all day and all night. Some don't have anything else to do but sit in front of the computer.....

It is my understanding that it's a "gentleman's agreement" to reply to the "I'll take it" with payment information. If the buyer does not respond in a reasonable amount of time, then it goes up for sale again. Respond/reply may take 24 hours as some of us have lives and don't sit at the computer 24x7 as the previous poster noted.

That way works for most. Ive replied ill take it with no other posts, then get a pm back to the one i sent saying it was sold. Who would send a pm to buy something without locking the deal in with an ill take it?

I like this. I may have to add it to my file of philosophical statements.

Thanks shortgrass, I'll credit you if I ever use it. jd

Thanks guys. I could see this one coming when he didn't respond after I PM'd the I'll take it note. Kinda left a sour taste. I dropped the forum off my to do list since I wasn't really all that impresses anyway. Too many snipers out there to get any good trigger time. I have things I need to do as well.

I'll add that I think it is poor form to list an item on multiple forums without so stating in the listing. I've posted an "I'll take it" only to learn that though I was first on that forum, somebody beat me to the draw on another forum. No harm no foul if the listing says something like, "Listed elsewhere; first 'I'll Take It' by time stamp wins." Without that, though, I agree: sour taste.

only list my stuff one place, here, get confused otherwise,,first PM gets it,,but as said don't stay up all night,,,

I'd rather the deal be sealed in the post. Most of my stuff is sold via pm's, but if you list a hot seller, you'll first get 3 "I'll take it pending questions, then a fourth outright I'll take it. Who wins here, it can take 3 hours to sort through the questions.
I bent sdwhirlwind over on here on a Stiller action, by rights it should have been his, I screwed up and dicked with a guy for an hour, and sold it to him.
I do my best to be a standup guy, but stuff slips through the cracks.

If you look at many of the for sale items here on accurate shooter, there has been an overall decline in the quality of those ads, example, the rules here provide that when you list an item it has to have a price, and method of payment. Forum Boss and the others that help fix things or keep folks following the rules have been totally lax in the enforcement of what constitutes a properly submitted ad! perhaps a little policeing of ads placed and a few people’s ads removed for improper ads would straighten up the folks violating site policy. If I have something for sale and I get an I’ll take it from 2 people you just look at the time stamp and that will tell you who responded first.

It is recommended to reply promptly.

However, read the instructions to buyers and sellers. There is NO CONTRACT between buyer and seller until every material term is agreed unequivocally by BOTH SIDES. And any seller is perfectly within his rights to chose his buyer or reject an offer-- he is NOT obligated to sell to the first "I'll take it" though it is a good business practice to favor the first legitimate offer.

There are many reasons why a seller may determine not to sell to someone who simply says "I'll take it." Adverse buyer feedback is one. Unwillingness to pay for insurance is another.

Again, this and other questions are answered if you read our instructions.

As for policing of ads, yes we would like to do more. But consider this, there may be 100 ads placed per day. To review each ad for 3 minutes would take 5 hours. To communicate to even 10-20 sellers and specify needed changes could take another 3 hours. That's a full-time job right there -- 8 hrs per day. As it is, I work 3300+ Hours per year on the site. 60+ hour weeks typically.

I think its really up to the person with the ad, like the bawss says, its their discretion to look at feedback and such.

As a buyer though, I both PM and reply to the thread, since I dont believe everyone is set to get email notifications for everything.

If I am selling, I would prefer buyer #1 to send a message either wanting more info, or want to know how to pay. And as long as they arent him-hollering around about the money, they get it.

Just my .02.
