I ain't no bag squeezer

Dimner

I do believe in Captain Crunch.
For some reason, I figured that thread title sounded funny.

So I need help figuring out what rear bag to get for a guy who is not a bag squeezer. Although, I guess I could learn to squeeze if it gave me the best results. But I have a feeling that if I can get the rifle to sit perfectly at POA without squeezing, I would be better off.

Let's take a step back. I am newer to this discipline. My shooting is basically load development mostly, and shooting at 200-300 yards to learn how to read the wind. This is from a firm bench. I am currently using a Bell and Carlson M40 style stock. 7x57 mauser is my current cartridge of choice. Not interested in magnums. Not sure if recoil is a factor in a bag choice.

My next build is important to take in consideration. I will be probably getting a 30BR or 6mmBR, or a 6.5 Grendel and building it on a stock that can track well at local causal fun competitions as well as work well prone in a field for 600+ yard shooting. I have not chosen the stock yet. It won't be a full fledged benchrest stock, but I think I may go with a butt that is not angled.

I do not shoot free recoil, however I check weld and shoulder with a light touch. I'm using the Caldwell BR front rest.

Is it possible to find a rear bag that will work for both needs? If so, what kind should I be looking at?

And adjustable bag rider or bag Jack?

I run one of these for my Redneck ELR rifle.

If your front test is adjustable then just run a bunny ear bag or precision underground bag.

If you don't want to squeeze, then your front rest should have the capability to make elevation changes. I do both, if I'm at a range with a bench, I use a front rest with elevation and windage adjustment with a rabbit ear bag. If I'm prone with a bipod, I use a squeeze bag (actually a sock with rice)

Is there a specific type of rabbit ear bag I should be looking at that will work with angled rear stocks and flat rear stocks? my front rest is adjustable for elevation.

Here are the two profiles I mean:

Try these guys

I use this one and really like it. The ears are big enough that you can squeeze them if you need to, although not as easily as a squeeze bag. I've used it with all kinds of stocks with no issue.

Thanks everyone, I went with the 14B. We will see how it works. I'm very optimistic. I also purchased one of the elbow pillows, I think that is going to help me alot. I have been having a much harding time holding the rifle consistently with the front rest being higher up. This will give me some where to put my chicken wing.

Use some baby powder on plain leather to lubricate the channel to allow the rifle to not stick to the stock.

If you can do the squeeze EXACTLY the same everything it'll work. Very few can so a solid rear support and an adjustable will hide the mistakes. All our shooting is longrange and those slight inconsistencies will show up.

Your other elbow will be ordering a pillow soon too.

for my left arm? hmm. I usually just keep my left arm flat on the bench not touching any of the setup. Is this not a normal method?
I have no idea if it’s normal or not but it will balance your left arm with your right arm. It will be more comfortable and you can squeeze the bag if you want to.
