Hydraulic Case Forming Die

I am thinking about purchasing a hydraulic forming die for my 6mm AI. I am looking for feed back from anyone that has had experience with them. I have 300 pieces of new brass and was wondering what you guys think. It seems to make sense to me, save the component cost and minimize barrel wear which on this caliber is already limited. I thought about the CW method but the noise would be an issue. Also who else make them besides Hornady and what is the best fluid to use water, isopropyl alcohol or machine oil.

After seeing the product right here and working on a cartridge brass that I was unable to get here in the US... I thought this would be agreat way to go to make 6X47 Swiss Match Brass from 22-250 brass. This was after tring to form brass by slowely working those long necks back in my FL die only to have sever shoulder colapse that looked like a dern Accordian.
For the exact same reason you are looking at them I was also.

So I sent off and email and waited..... and waited .... and waited ...... and waited. In the mean time I figured out how to get the case formed so that i could fireform it.
Finally 6 MONTHS LATER i get an email back saying they would be happy to make me a die. At that point I was not in the mood to spend my money with a company that had half year response time.

Do I think its a great idea? You bet. The only reason I say all this is if your in a hurry you might wanto just call them, instead of getting bentout of shape like i did. I could have been more proactive about getting an answer and did not.. that is my fault. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
Call if your in a hurry.

If you go this route I would like to hear how it goes.

Fella's I don't have time tonight to do a forum search but there was a topic on this about a year ago and there was more negative responses then positive ones, as I remember a couple smiths chimed in and said shared there experiences and what the problem was (case stretch) I think and also some that could make the die, I am interested in trying one myself to see the + and - of it for myself.

Ive been waiting on some of the more experience to comment on this tread.
Corrected me if iam wrong but, in some research on the dies you still have to
fireform to finish the process?

Hornady claims the case comes out 95% fireformed. At that point the case will be at near max capacity and ready for load development. I as well would like to hear from someone with first hand experience.

Tim,
P.M Rustystud, I believe he has some first hand knowledge on this, I may be wrong but I think he was a lead contributor in the last thread of this nature.

Thanks, Wayne I will contact Rustystud. And if I decided to go this route I will post my results. Although it will be awhile because Hornady needs 6 to 8 weeks lead time.

There is fire forming, the reloader goes from purchasing a press, die and shell holder to fire forming in one weak, as in chamber a round, pull the trigger and ‘WA-LA’ the reloader graduates to fire forming, I form first then fire.

just recently recieved a Hornady forming die and found it worked about 98% in transforming the case.

your 1st problem will be in keeping the press ram from jumping when hitting the die.

yur 2nd problem will be in getting the hang of how hard to hit to get a full expansion of the case and deciding if you need to hit it more than once which requires refilling with water

a learning curve, it did work but first firing will be from cases about 98% formed in my opinion.
