Hurrah! (not) I joined the club today!

Chargemaster users club. Apparently lots of guys have forgotten to close the drain valve on their chargemaster and then attempted to refill the hopper only to find the powder running out on the loading bench. Well, I had a routine, a system if you will, that I thought would prevent that from happening. Systems only work if you follow the routine and I obviously skipped a step and ended up with a half pound of Varget on my workbench. So now, sadly, I'm a member of the club!

LOL - aye, no "system" is perfect. That's why gun rules are redundant . . . some day you will violate one, but the other one will save you.

Anyhow, when I was using the Chargemaster I had no further "spills" after applying a tape label near the top of the powder tube with "Close the %&^ing Drain" written in red block letters.

Seemed to work for me, YMMV.

I was sure I would never do this. I ALWAYS CHECKED the drain just prior to adding powder. But it became so routine to me, that even when I looked at the drain, it was so automatic I didn't really look. So I'm just glad it was a stick powder and not ball.

Now I turn my Chargemaster to drain the powder, and after I clear the last granules using a hurricane blower, I close the port. I check it 3 times, before I return it to it's use position. So far so good.

But like with a chrono, you have either shot yours, or you are going to.

I took a Cool Whip bowl and cut a notch in it. That sits under the drain hole and catches the powder if I have a brain fart and don't close the port. Plus, I can drain the hopper into it when I'm finished with that powder. A large funnel and it's easy to pour back into the bottle.

I simply never use the emptying port; I unplug the machine, remove the loose stuff from the top, and pour the powder back into the bottle using a largish funnel. And yes, this is AFTER I left the plug off, probably more than once. :(

FWIW I always plug the power back in and turn on the machine; it's always warm and ready to go at my house.

I have a theory that RCBS engineers are screwing with us. First, because there are a million ways to design this so that it wouldn't do that. That's a pretty solid case all by itself. But the real evidence, the incontrovertible proof, is that it has been mathematically proven by MIT PhD's that it is impossible to design a device less likely to catch a primer than the Rock Chucker's "primer catcher". Explain that.

BTDT, a few times. It's like those that fly retractable gear airplanes. When it comes to landing with the wheels up, there are those that have and those that will. :p Yes, BTDT too.

Yep, I too have done it once. I now have a label on top of the 1500's powder Lid. It Reads " DUMP PORT CLOSED ?? " In red Ink. I have to remove the Lid to Fill the powder hopper, so far it has been working. I too have made a Powder Dump Catcher that I keep under the dump port. I made it out of an old Powder Bottle cut to fit under the dump port.

It was a bad feeling the first time I poured the powder in and realized that I hadn't closed the dump port. :(

Close the drain works great. Larry
