Hunting with Berger Match Hybrid target bullets

The Hybrids have an excellent track record for me. The 6mm 105 the 140 6.5 and the 180 7mm have all killed game up to and including Elk with ease out to some pretty incredible distances. The nice thing about them is they have been leaving very large exit holes and massive internal damage. No complaints from me.

Maybe if Eric had 40 or 50 years of hunting all over the US, 100's of filled tags and did NOT sell bullets, I'd have some confidence in his word on the subject.

Give me a bullet with a bonded core or one that have some mechanical means of securing the core to the jacket. Controlled expansion and deep penetration seems to be the ticket for reliable kills.

Aside from that, since the original post, have hunted African plains game four times. Killed dozens of animals taken with the Berger VLDs and never a second shot needed. Have used 6.5 130 VLDs, 140 VLDs, 7mm 168 VLDs.

Another thread on this forum got me to reading some old Jack O’Connor books this morning. I don’t know how many times I read “properly constructed bullet” in the space of an hour of reading. I don’t think he would agree a bullet that “blows up” as one that is properly constructed.

Of course many things have changed since he wrote those words; guys can marry guys, the 6.5 Criedmore was invented and long range shooting somehow became hunting so who knows what he would say today?

With all due respect, if left up to our beloved Jack, we'd all be shooting .270s for everything from coyotes to elephant.

...and bench rest. Just kidding. He really touted the use of many cartridges and was all fact when it came to hunting and terminal ballistics. Back then people argued over lever action chamberings vs 30-06, the 270 was the new kid on the block with great ballistics and he matter of fact compared to other chamberings of the time, it was the public, like me, that put it on a higher pedestal imo. I'm afraid he might have had a different favorite if he was around today. IMO he'd have liked that link you posted once to the African forum with all the hunting/bullet info. That thread was incredible and should be a must read for hunters wanting to research bullet performance. I have great expectations on using Bergers classic hunter this year but I'm keeping an open mind. I'm using them or VLDs due to accuracy I get and reputation even though my sole wants to be using accubonds. I also like the sounds of the bullet nosler uses in factory ammo called orynx. It sounds like the perfect mix of variables for hunting - sounds like anyway.

Almost impossible to convince cup and core or bonded bullets adherents to the Berger philosophy even when they see them in action. With correct shot placement, the results are the same.
