hunting this year?

Frankly, I pretty much put up with the rest of the year, waiting for the fall hunting seasons. Who's working on a new rifle? Working up loads? Trying a new scope? Whatcha hunting for this fall??? If we can't hunt yet, might as well chat about it!

My plans are to try for black bear, mule deer and elk here in Washington. Yeah, I put in for a bighorn sheep tag too - but the odds mighty slim for that draw. Still, it's nice to dream... Also put in for a Wyoming mule deer tag. I like to hunt Wyoming every now and again.

Have dusted off the hunting rifles, started loading some ammo for 'em and have taken them all to the range at least once in the past few weeks. Of course one good rifle would do it all, and has for me in the past, but I'm a rifle nut, and I like to play.

My mainstay for years has been a 7mm Rem mag. This one is an old 1968 Rem 700 that I just gussied up by slipping it into a new 700 CDL stock. She's never looked so purty. Just a simple fixed power 6x Leupold. Loading 175 gr Sierra Gamekings, with Reloader 22. Nothing real hot, right around 2850 fps with good solid sub MOA accuracy. She's dialed in at 300 yards. The combo has been very effective in the past.

The big .300 Ultra Mag I've been playing with is slated for a new laminated stock from Joel Russo. Right now it's all in pieces, and I'm not sure if it's going to come together before the season opens. Looking to set that one up as a long-range hunter... Trying to combine the power of the Ultra Mag with the precision of a match-grade rifle...

A favorite for the past few years has been my multi-purpose .25-06 Rem 700. In the off-season it scorches a few rockchucks and coyotes. During the season, it's proven very effective on mule deer. Loading a 100 gr Barnes TSX to 3340 fps, and keep the 4.5-14 Leupold zeroed at 300 yards... A nice light-recoiling rig that is sub MOA accurate and very lethal.

Don't know how much use it will see this year, but I also hunt with my real-world SWAT rifle from time to time. Have had the rifle for about 11 years and several .308 barrels. A tad on the heavy side, it's a keeper, and always does a fine job when I bother to lug it afield. A simple Rem 700 in a McMillan stock with a Krieger 1:12 twist barrel, topped by a 4.5-14x Leupold. Proven half MOA capable to 600 yards. Nice. Built by Jim Cloward, new stock bedded by Rick Freudenberg. Tough rifle, and an all-weather hunter. I've bounced back and forth between various 150 - 168 gr bullets for this rifle, depending.

What about your plans and rifles?

I have a Marlin 39A with a leupy 4X that i got late last season.I cant wait to nail some squirrels with it .I went out with it last year and tagged two squirrels with it but I was using standard velocity ammo and both bushy tails got away. This year I'm going out with Remington yellow jackets and i dont plan on having many more drag offs .I cant walk into my gun room without picking that little gun up and working the lever.

My 25-06 will be next month.Being built by Tom wills out of Bend OR.Hope to run seirra 117gr gamekings at around 3050-3100 for muleys here in central and eastern oregon this fall.

Its a 1903 springfield action, formerly my grandpas very sporty 30-06.A 1-10 24" shilen I got from FryeGuy.The stock is a bit on the ugly side cuz most of the clear coat is almost worn off. But over 60 years shes still straight as an arrow.I will sander down and give her a face lift and were good to go.

I got the old savage 99 lever gun out and sighted in for its first hunting trip in 30+ years sense my grandpas been gone. Open sights with 150 gr remy factory ammo shoots 2"-3" groups at 100 and 5"ers at 200.Good for any deer ive got a mind to shoot. Its going on my first Blacktail hunt in western oregon.

Woo Hoo! Wyoming draw results are avail and I was successful for a mulie tag! :) Glad the 7mm Rem mag and the .308 are shooting so well. Now I need to start getting in better shape for hunting at higher elevations. Home is only about 1000' ASL, and last time I hunted Wyoming we were camped at 9,000', and hunted to 11,000' ASL.

Don't expect to have to go that high for deer this fall, but looking over the maps I'll likely be hunting at 6,000 - 7,000' or thereabouts.

Good luck to anyone else still waiting on tags - Washington results aren't avail yet. Planning on deer, elk & bear hunting there. Very unlikely to be drawn for the bighorn sheep. Odds are very poor.

Regards, Guy

Just finished my new lightweight 30-06AI. With a Leupold 3.5-10x50 sitting in kelby rings, it comes in at 7lbs 9oz. I blueprinted a stainless 700LA, sold the bolt on ebay and had Dave Kiff make me up a beautiful fluted bolt with .0015 total clearence to the bolt raceway in the action. It sports a 24" Shilen 1-10" twist in the #3 contour. I pillar bedded the action into a Bansner sheephunter stock that I picked up off ebay, great deal). I've worked the factory trigger over to break at a nice and crisp 2.5lbs,tough to deal with when I'm so used to 2oz Jewell's). I finished all the metal in dark earth Gunkote, which I must say is a fabulous product once I decided to read all the instructions:). The stock is finished in a brown grit filled paint I found at Brownells, the name escapes me). This will be my primary big game rifle except for the long shot spots. I took it to the range last weekend to fireform some cases, and to my surprise, I was able to put 10 shots into a little over .750". I couldn't be happier with how this project turned out, the rifle looks awsome and with a little load development, I think I'll have a great all weather rifle.
