Hunting season results?

How's the crowd here doing this hunting season?

I managed to take a good young mulie buck with tall antlers in Wyoming. Met some really great people there too. No luck here at home in Washington though.

There is more to shooting than matches and small groups ya know! ;)

Well, heck, after some very gracious people allowed me to hunt their land, I managed to take a decent Wyoming mulie. He's a fairly narrow 5x5,if you include the brow tines) and a tad over 24" tall. Took him at the outrageous distance of about 30 yards, with a .25-06 and a 100 grain Barnes TSX @ 3340 fps mv.

You know - those flat shooting cartridges are vital for long range shooting like that... :)

Some other deer, elk, bear or whatever hunters here?

Regards, Guy

That is a pretty amazing shot! Considering you were using a scoped rifle that close. Great job, You gotta love your 25-06's. What kind of wound did that bullet leave, I have loaded them to almost 3500fps with my 25-06A.I.. Let's see some hunting pictures guys!

Its been a bust so far this year. Daytime temps have been in the mid 80's. Need I say more? Hoping to get on them hard with the second go of the rut first part of December.

Just got back this PM from the late, final) season elk hunt in the high country. Took my last two days of vacation that were left this year. Unsuccessful this time out, but so was most everyone according to the DOW :,

Too warm, no snow, nothing but dry leaves. I'd swear you could hear every step I took over a quarter mile away.

This year wasn't all bad, however. Got a nice mulie buck on the opening day of deer season.

It has been so dry here in SE NC that the deer have changed their patterns of movement grossly and the bear have moved a whole lot more than they normally do here. Was able to get a cow horn and a ugly five point so far. So, I guess I'll just keep on feeding the bear until the season rolls around and punch a hole in one of them ugly things. Last year by this time I had filled my tags but it was a "normal season" for rainfall. That's it for me guys. Kinda skimpy, huh. Bill

Well I got A forky this year.My pic library is being funky so no pics on him yet. 300 savage/levergun/opensights 10yds, headshot,in a friends yard.67 lbs dressed. Its MEAT.

I have been three times and harvested 4 whitetail deer in the last 10 days. Mostly management does. I did shoot a 17" heavy horned 6 pointer.
The 150 Sciroccos are working well.

FINALLY, FINALLY, finally! Here in NW Montana we are just geeting weather that resembles conditions in Montana rather than South Florida beach weather. Hopefully this will get those big Mule Deer bucks into the mood and start acting a little less intelligent. I'm going to take a few days next week and head over to the 'East Side' and hunt on the other side of the reservation. In the past I have had some success up near the Canadian border. Hopefully I will have something to shoot at with my new 338 Snipe-Tac. More to come.

My friend shot this Axis on 11/07/07 weight 185lb at 95yd with Remington 30-06.I shot this Fallow deer last season 06. This 07 opening season I shot two nice doe AXIS at 85yd I shoot a Ruger .243 Targetgrey M77 MARK-II TARGET

Guys,

I am going to hunt every night this next week!!!

A buddy of mine that has not ever hunted at night is going to go with me.... I hope we have some good luck...

It has been very dry in GA this year and we seem to have more song-dogs!!!

If you read the 7mm-08 thread I built the gun this spring for deer and sheep. This was the first critter that I saw through the scope with this gun.

Andy - congratulations on a great ram! Wow... Doubt I'll ever be drawn, but there's a good size herd of bighorns only a few miles out of town here. Please tell us more about your hunt! Looks like rugged country - as expected for a sheep hunt.

Flybuster - the Barnes TSX really worked very well. I popped the buck in the shouder, and as I was above him, it angled down into his heart and out the other side, through the ribs. The heart looked like an open dictionary when I cleaned him. The bullet went through the on-side shoulder with no problem. There didn't appear to be any fragmentation at all, just expansion and penetration. Pretty much what that Barnes TSX is supposed to do.

I think a conventional bullet would have worked, but might have made much more of a mess of the meat. The Barnes left me with a lot of useful meat in that shoulder.

I just got back from a 3 week deer hunt in East NC. I am a meat hunter first off and trophy hunter second. They have unlimited doe permits in East NC this year. I killed 7 doe and 2 bucks one a nice 6 point and the other was a big old spike that needed culling. I got one doe with my T/C Contender 357 Mag barrel at 104 yards with a 180gr Hornady XTP pushed by 13.5 grs. H-110. This was the first deer I ever killed with this barrel. The shot was a quartering shot facing me. The bullet entered the center of the right front shoulder and traveled through the chest and paunch and I found the bullet just under the hide in front of the left back hip with a text book mushroom. The deer ran about 50 yards after being hit. I have been experimenting with bullets in a 308 winchester for a few years and have decided to stick with the Nosler 125 gr. ballistic tip pushed by 46 grs IMR 4895. I have killed 10 deer with this bullet in the past few years and they have all been bang flop. I killed two deer with this rifle this year. The other deer were shot with my 25-06 with 117 gr. Sierra Prohunter pushed by 49 grs. IMR or AA 4350 and most everything I shoot with this rifle and load is bang flop if not they don't ever go over 30 yards. I made a great shot on one doe with the 25-06. I was walking to my stand that is on a log road between two cut-overs. It is 300 yards from the stand to the entrance of the road and from the stand you can see 300 more yards the other way. As I entered the road three deer were standing right next to my stand so I went prone and picked out the biggest one, all were does, and dropped her. It was 254 yards. I have a years supply of meat for the family and my friends and neighbors.

I have made 2 long shoots ON DEER,one800 yards, one 820yards,my story is posted on another thread,HOPEING FOR A 1000YARD SHOOT BEFORE SEASON IS OVER.
