Whitetail Defugalties

Now that I'm retired, I go back home to Wisconsin for deer hunting. First time in 31 years last season. After the first three days of gun season, we will do some drives. I was on a drive and had finished my push to the county road. People were starting to gather after the drive. I thought back to all those times when the boys were gathering at the completion of the drive, a buck would come running by thumbing his nose and of course nobody was ready. So, while waiting for the boys to gather, I walked up the slight rise off the road, making sure I was 100 feet off the road. Stood there for a bit. Leaned the gun on tree to eat a chocolate bar. Bad move. I hear leaves crunchin' and here comes a deer through the timber about half speed, that trot and bound BS. Of course I had to look down to grab the gun. Get on the deer in the thick stuff but not sure if it's got horns, not a monster for sure. Deer stops broadside at about 40 yards. Big deer. Easy chip shot. Head is not visible. Nobody has a doe tag. Never did see it's head clearly. Deer wins. AAAaaaaargH!!!! I'm quite sure I'm not the only one to have had hunting defulgalties. Anybody willing to fess up?

Same thing happened to me during Elk season. Sitting next to a log and turned and there was an elk about 20yds away with its head in the branches. I had a cow tag and wasn't sure. We stared at each other for 10 min. then she turned and ran!!
