Hunting rifle with 22inch barrel for a 308

I am about to start on the same setup. 22" 308 Win. Benchmark Barrel 700 Action. I would like to shoot a 150 Partition, if the rifle likes them. I have a pretty good selection of powders. I was going to try Varget first, since I have about 8#'s of it. But, if not I have 4064, 8208, H4895 and then some. I know I'm probably in the minority, but the 308 has always been a dud caliber for me. I have had very bad experience with the 308. This will be my 4th time around with one and I have never had a shooter. Best one was 1.5 MOA at best. I'm going to give it one last try.

IMR 4064 under the Sierra 175 "Open Tip Match" for military purposes but also know as Match King HPBT for civilians with Federal cases and Federal Match primers is what is in the military match ammo also used by snipers etc. I have always had very good success with IMR 4895 and 4064 with depending on bullets used in the 308 Win. IMR 4895 for 155 gr and under and 4064 for 165 and heaver.

You might also want to look at IMR4166...it is slightly faster than 4064 and I have had very good luck accuracy wise in several calibers. When I shot hi-power service rifle {M1A} I used a lot of 4064. It worked great too.
I will say this, I did not have very good results with Reloder 16 in my 308, But it is fantastic in my 7mm-08....go figure???

RL-16 in 308win ??? maybe you meant to say RL-15 ???

No sir, it is Reloder 16...was introduced about the same time as Reloder 26. Not trying to be facetious...I don't know if you weren't aware there is a Reloder 16 or if you are saying it is generally not associated with the 308???? I found load data, but had no luck in my rifle. In my 7mm-08, 44.7 grains behind a Hornady 154 grain Interlock put them in just about the same hole {at 100 yards}.

I know RL-16. I just figured it's too slow for 308win since it's just about identical in burn rate as H4350.
Maybe with 215 / 230 grainers it might work OK.

I used to load H-4350 and 190 smk in 308win with very good velocity and accuracy. So I understand why you wanted to try RL-16.

I understand. I left out the part about the rifle having a 28" barrel too....sorry about that. I find that if the barrel is a little long sometimes the slower burning powders work great.

Edit: I have had exceptional results, accuracy wise, with IMR4166. The thing it didn't do was not copper foul. It is supposed to have an additive to help prevent copper fouling in the bore, but I had a fair amount of fouling still. I thought it was the barrels because at the time I had two new rifles I had just barreled. Tried some different powder and either the bores broke in and stopped or the powder change did the trick as far as the copper was concerned. I need to go back and try it again to see if it still fouls.

Considering a faster burning powder due to the shorter barrel. Will use a 150 Gr Nosler ballistic tip for deer and a 168gr LR Accubond or a 168gr Barnes for Elk. Appreciate any suggestions

Can't go wrong with a 4895 AA, or IMR, or H. (H for best temp stability). H322 worth a try too

H322 is incredible in every 308 I’ve tried. Published data out there for 150 /155 class bullets.

38.0-38.3 safe in mine.

Accuracy nothing short of astonishing , recoil and blast GREATLY reduced over RL15/CFE223/4064/etc.
