hunting gloves

need recommendations. gets 0 here in winter. need some good gloves. Next best socks you've ever used. got columbia boots that are rated to 40 below. feet still got cold a few times year before last.

Get some of the military gortex cold weather boots they work down to -40 no problem standing guard. As far as gloves go the surplus mits that have finger covers that slide up and off of the fingers. Very warm and can slide them off to take a shot easy as can be. We had leather gloves with thinsulate liners in them that are very nice. They are bulky though.

Go to a ski shop and find mittens that are <2o rated where the end of the mit will slip off. mittens are warmer than gloves as the fingers keep each other warm, in a glove each finger is on its own.

you can ball your fist up in the enclosure and rub fingers against each other, this is the way skiers and far north hikers/hunters keep them warm. be sure the boots are not tight. you need room for them to heat without your feet pressing against the outside walls firmly.

I ski alot and hunt in northern maine as well. I found mittens work best, just make sure to get a nice pair of glove liners. Theyll run you about 15 for a nice set. They really help with moisture control and when you flip the mitten back to shoot your fingers wont freeze off. As far as boots, i agree with them being on the loose side. Also double layer socks help wonders. Just a good pair of normal cotton socks under a pair of good quality wool socks can make even the worst insolated boots keep your feet toasty! Also if your planning on walking to say a stand or a blind you may want to think about a second pair or cottons socks. I find a 5 minute walk usually gets my feet really warm and they sweet a bit. After sitting for 10-15 they are freezing. Just a quick change of socks can keep you warm all day. Moisture control is the key in cold weather.

Use a hand muff w/hand warmers and boot blankets w/boot warmers. This way you will not have to use larger cumbersome gloves or boots.

The glove liners from Under Armour will greatly improve any glove that you choose. If used with mitts, you still don't have a bare hand but they are very sensitive. I find myself wearing them for just gloves a lot. As stated before, not expense, 15-20 bucks & worth much more. I have a pair in every coat pocket.

Tried a bunch of gloves but the one that worked the best for me was Mittens with liners. I got mine at Cabela's. The pair I purchased had a zipper so you could access the trigger with the liner.

If you put one of those heat packs in each glove your fingers will be real toasty. :)

thin cotton, not thick inside wool not tight - all those agreeing on mitten are right on. liners are a good addition, thin ones

let them breath. have hunted with -20-30f and skied with wc of -30 this works.

I am with Larryh128, polypro liner socks under heavy wool socks. NO COTTON, cotton holds moisture and is a very poor insulator.

Agreed, a wicking base sock is better than cotton.

For my face I usually am either wearing a gaitor or I have a scarf I can pull up. a scarf is a nice addition around the neck to keep the breezes off.
