Hunting Expenses This Fall

Maybe them hippies have it figured out? True pioneers, trendsetters. See them all over in Mercedes vans, camping at the city park, Walmart parking lots, forest service campground, blm campgrounds, looking like a homeless person brushing their teeth on the sidewalk by the outhouse,
I'd think that would be really hard on the enamel......brushing your teeth like that.

Last time I looked there was no Rocky Mountains or elk here in Texas.
Absolutely not that is why I moved to Colorado, i drew mule deer and pronghorn and paid less than $100. My point is spending a few thousand on out of state tags is normal for the OP but filling a few tanks of diesel is what is stopping him. You failed to mention there is no moose nor bighorn sheep in TX either. :)

Licenses and tags are very expensive to begin with, when you figure fuel food lodging and then you have to double the fuel that’s just a straw that breaks the camels back for some people

I went out scouting for spring snows 3 times, wound up at 250.00 to do that, gas has gone up since then. Was contemplating going to Manitoba to fish, 1000km ea way, byt the time I'm done that would like be 7 tanks of gas, ballpark 850.00 now. Spotting geese this fall will be brutal, at best 75.00/day, and i usually do 20-25 days a year, and I even moved to within 1/2hr of the area I hunt, used to be a 2 hr drive to get to where I live now.

I think the fuel prices are going to keep the competitions at low levels of participation this year also.
That isn't going to help grow the sport.

I usually travel from Texas to several Rocky Mountain states each fall for elk and mule deer. This year, I just bought preference points due to the price of gasoline and food.

On hunts last fall to Colorado and Montana, I spent $1400 on fuel and food on the road. That's not counting camp food and generator fuel. Dragging my 22' cargo trailer with my Tundra doesn't help.

There's no doubt my expenses would balloon much higher this fall for gas and food. It also seems the F&G keep adding on fees here and there before you can get around to buying your tags. Nonresident
prices are high, but that's the price we pay to hunt that beautiful country.

Hopefully the November elections will begin to bring 2020 fuel prices back and 2024 will stabilize them.

This will be the first time I have not made it to the high country, just wondering how many are not going due to this current cluster.
Our government doesn't determine gas prices. Google who determines gas prices.

One must take into account the articles that Google will direct you to. Not saying you're wrong, but mighty strange when the previous administration had a plan that made us energy self sufficient and the latest administration has us begging OPEC. ( The Saudis are not taking his calls by the way)

The plan was most likely the government telling you what you want to hear and you believe their BS. They had a plan, really. No US government can pass laws or regulations that make petroleum much more available. The politicians have teams of advisors and lawyers that we pay for that tell the politicians what they need to say to the public to be popular.

“No US government can pass laws or regulations that make petroleum much more available.”
Right...
They dang sure can pass laws to make it NOT available!
Seems like some dude, thru executive orders, made them drillers go to work.

Are you referring to Trumps plan to increase oil production? All of these things are very complicated and cannot be explained by a few sentences.

The oil industry’s fortunes have been withering on President Donald Trump’s watch, with dozens of oil companies falling into bankruptcy as weak crude prices take a toll on the sector he contends would be abolished if he’s not reelected.

Though some of those industry woes were emerging last year as companies grappled with a glut of oil, people in the business say they were made worse by the president’s trade wars and mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic. So far least 40 U.S. oil companies have sought bankruptcy protection in 2020 while dozens of others have slashed spending and cut tens of thousands of jobs.

Trump frustrated the industry last month by declaring vast swaths of shoreline off Florida and other states off-limits to drilling, an election-year reversal of his past promises to expand offshore production. And even one nominal bright spot for the industry — the administration’s aggressive rollback of regulations — has been so rushed and beset by legal challenges that Democrats may have little trouble reinstating the rules if they reclaim power.

“Three and a half years of rollbacks facing serious litigation ensures a lot of things are ‘to-be-decided,’” said Wayne D’Angelo, an energy lawyer and partner at legal firm Kelley Drye who has represented oil and gas companies and trade associations on federal environmental issues.

More fundamentally, oil and gas executives told POLITICO, the president doesn’t really understand their business — and his famously chaotic White House has set up a system where only a relative handful of favorite energy executives have access to people who can shape policy.

Really dude, you read Politico? More liberal dribble.

I started hunting in Colorado in 1987. We made that trip 5 years in a row. We camped in tents, cooked on the camp fire and showered at the YMCA. It was awesome! And then life got in the way.

Last year was the first of what hope to be many hunting trips with my adult Sons.
We did not harvest an animal but we had a great time hanging out, cooking, eating, talking, drinking and just enjoying each other's company.

It was a pretty expensive trip since I pulled a loaded down 30' Toy Hauler.
Plus almost $700 for an OTC Elk tag. Not to mention the qualifying license, atv sticker and all the food and RV park $$. Now Diesel is nearly double the price.

On the long drive home last year, we were making plans for this year!
So to cut some cost. We'll be leaving the TH at home and we are looking into getting an Wall tent with a stove. I've waited 30 years to make these hunting trips with my kids. So until it gets where i have to sell a Kidney to pay for the trip..... we're going!

For the cost of a wall tent, stove, cots, water containers, and all of the other items you need in order to have a tent camp you will be money ahead to just use your existing toy hauler. Yes, fuel is expensive but it will still be cheaper to buy the fuel plus have the comfort of the toy hauler. Also you will still have to pull a trailer of some sort to haul all of the camping gear so fuel savings will still be minimal.
Get out your calculator and start adding up the costs and I suspect that you will re-think the tent camping thing.

Hunting pressure is off the charts in my part of Montana. We are not managing it well but if the high prices reduce the number of hunters here it will be the only good thing that comes from it.

Arizina residents have a hard time getting tags for the quality hunts so we’ve learned to hunt the surrounding states and some other areas too. It’s gonna cost more this year but we are going regardless, like mentioned before you only live once!

The way things are going next year might even be worse, better go while you can.
