Hunting cartridge,low recoil)

I am looking around for ideas for a hunting rifle for my old lady and these are the things Iam considering.

I need low low recoil
able to take deer sized game to 250yds
common enough to buy ammo in a pinch but I do reload
has to be 6mm or larger for local law
Not interested in a .243 Win right now.

I have been reading and I don't think I can get any better of a cartridge than the .250 savage. The local store even stocks ammo. Any other suggestions?

A 7mm-08 will do nicely. Commercially available, low recoil, many bullet choices and very accurate.

I am a 243 win fan.

My son and I hunt mule deer, with excellent results from our light-kicking rifles. He shoots a 6mm Remington, using 95 grain bullets and I use a .25-06 with either 100 or 115 grain bullets. Neither rifle has much recoil, they're both accurate & flat shooting. Every mule deer we've shot with those rifles has simply fallen down dead when hit.

Ranges to 250 yards are a piece of cake with them too, we actually keep them sighted-in at 300 yards. Also, they're very useful for off-season rockchuck and coyote shooting.

I think your choice of the .250 is equally good, or a .257 Roberts.

Just out of curiosity... Why no interest in the .243 Win? With decent bullets, it's a darned fine deer-killer.

Regards, Guy

How about the 6.8 SPC. Great choice, low recoil,.277 dia. Great cartridge for older kids and small adults. Factory ammo available by Rem,Hornady,Silver State. Brass also available.

The 243 and 6mm Rem are pretty much the same thing.

Have you thought about a 270 Win?

The 7mm-08 and 25-06 are also great guns as said earlier.

250 Sav VG choice, so would the 300 Sav with 125 gr bullets or the 6.5 Creedmore all basically the same case in different calibers. At a 250 yard range they would all perform excellent, even a bit further out.I think staying with a short action cartridge would be the better choice over a long action cartridge IHMO,a little lighter rifle and shorter too).....BTW getting the Wife envolved in hunting is a GREAT way to increase your INVENTORY

100% in agreement with alf 260 or 7-08.

The 250 Savage or 257 Roberts would be good alternatives. Don't forget about the 300 Savage either.

I posted this two times and both times it ended up a post #1 for some reason. I will give it a try again.
The 257 Roberts, 260 Rem, 25-06 would all be very good rounds with low recoil. The 25-06 would be my pick and it would also be the one that you could find ammo at most any place easier than the others.

Well if convenience at a Mom & Pop's country store is a criteria than you need to look at the 243, 270, & 30-06.

Any ammo store worth there salt will carry these in different weight configurations.

I'm not sure 25-06, 257 Roberts, 6mm Rem, and so on are a common enough round for small shops to carry, before anyone goes off on me I'm not anti 25-06 or any of those other rounds, all are great deer rounds just not as common).

Recoil was the orginal concern, I wouldn't go above a 270 Win myself.

My thoughts exactly.

When you said low recoil, .243 popped into my head. Why are you so dead set against it? Or are you really looking for someone to talk you into it? If so, I am here. Buy a .243 and don't look back.

Ill second that, the 243 with Nosler partition bullets. No recoil and 1 shot kills out to 300 yd. Even the occasional gas station that slls ammo will have a box of 243 around. Most of the others itll be hit and miss. Oh, Ive never recovered a bullet with the partitions, even when shoulders are broken. The lack of recoil will keep faces smiling, cant promise that with some other choices.

I have been using my 7-08 for a couple of years and love it. I took a couple of fox's off the sticks last night no problem. It handle's like a pussy cat. Also the .260 have great BC if she fancy's reaching out a little further.
