Happy holidays to all
I have a remington 700 chambered in 6x44br......built by seeley masker in 1980 with 2 bbls 14 twist .....inherited from a friend who passed.....his reload data was 34.5 grains of imr 4895 with 70 grain hollister and 70 grain Sierra hpbt match.......had some of his old loaded ammo shot really great......tried some with current imr 4895 not so good
I acquired 3 forming dies to resize the old remington 30 ubr brass ,rough trimmed and neck turned for .063 neck.....i also aquired some custom sizing and seating dies........going to fire form them using his old data.....my question is does any members have some data for this cartridge....using different powders and bullets..?.I have read about people shooting heavy bullets but this is a 1: 14 so the heaviest would be 80 gr.....thanks for any help

I doubt the 1-14 will stabilize the one true Competition 80 grain bullet, the Bart’s 80 Grain Dominator.

The rifle was probably built to shoot typical Short Range Benchrest bullets in the 68 grain range. The case was also designed around the old case volume requirement of 30/30 capacity.

Honestly, if your aim is to compete in any Registered HBR venue, you really should ditch the old 6x44 and convert the rifle over to one of the short 30’s. A 30BR will shoot with more accuracy, and be more suited to the best edge scoring system.

You might have some nostalgia with the old 6x44 built by Serling, but that would be the only reason to invest mush money and time into the barrel.

The bbl that was just put on was brand new they were both done by seely I don't plan to compete ....my old friend had euber 68 fb and bt euber 65 fb and bt and hollister 68 fb and bt and 70 and some bullets made by pindell .....he shot short range hunter class with this and his 6x250 and 30 aardvark .the only thing that I have invested is some time and good thoughts of my friend that left the range ....just trying to try some other powders with the 6x44br.....I have a 30br don't need another. Thanks for responding

In that case, 4895 or any powder in that burn rate will work just fine. N-140 or 150 will work fine as well.
I push 68 grn bullets out of my 6BRA at 3550 with 4895, so you should be able to get that out of your 30x44 with ease.
The best course is to set up a chronograph and starting with around 36 grins of 4895, get a baseline velocity and work from there.

David- I guess it was in the 1980's I tried 6MM in NBRSA Hunter Class competition. My barrel was a 14 twist Hart and was chambered for what we called 6X45, it was 6MM IHSMA reamer ran in for 45 MM case length, we necked 22-250 cases up to 6MM. Me and several others tried it and it shot pretty with 34.5 GR of H-4895 as far as groups but never scored as good on a NBRSA hunter target as the 30 calibers did.

I can't offer you anything but encouragement. Shooting an oldie, with memories attached, often has more value than being competitive. Enjoy your time and my guess is you will sense his presence in the memories it invokes.

I had a couple boxes of the Sierra 85 HPBT bullets from a .243 that I bought back in the early 2000s. Recently dug those out for a 6mmARC that I recently bought, and found a load that held about ¾ MOA out to 200 yards for me. Used those bullets up and then started on a new box, and had to redo that load completely. Groups went to over 1 MOA, so I started taking measurements. The new bullets had changed shape enough that even though the OAL was the same, my CBTO measurement was longer, and it now sat against the rifling, where the older bullets were about 0.010" off.

So my point here is that you may have to redo that load if you're using newer manufactured bullets. It might be as simple as adjusting seating depth, but you might have to alter the powder charge slightly too, depending upon how much your seating depth gets adjusted.

I've noticed this happening a couple other times when using older bullets and newer bullets. I've heard that old/new powder can do this as well, but that hasn't been something I've experienced personally.

Do you have any old bullets? If you could locate a few it might be worth trying them with similar burn rate powders if you tired them with his load and it didn't work.

I buy small lots of custom 6mm target bullets...not sure why...but I developed a load with 66 grain Cheek bullets that I love. I have only 100 or so left. So I will be trying some others I have next.

Don't laugh, but toss in a few 55 grain NBT for 100-200 yard targets. My old 13.5 twist shoots them in one hole. Different case, but similar in capacity I think.

What load did he list with 4895?

Don’t know if you looked here on Accurate Shooter Main site/guns of the week/ but here is a great article on the cartridge you are asking about. Hope it helps you…
