HOWA varmint surpreme

Thinking of buying a Howa varmint surpreme Just want to know how good these rifles are for accuracy and tigger adjustments. 204 ruger is what I'm thinking of Buying Howa dosn't seem to be very popular in Australia .

I have one is 223. I sent it in and had a timney trigger put in. They say you can adjust the factory just fine, but if you go to low the saftey stops working. Accuracy has been acceptable for the price. Holds MOA, not bad for a inexpensive gun.

I also had to remove some material from the barrel channel to free float it.

I have one in .243 nice rifle the trigger on mine is good but it will only shoot MOA, i have gone through loads of powders and bullets to find a sweet load, but the gun will only shoot MOA, at worst it opend up to 2" group at 100yds

The worst thing about the Howa's is that they have really long throats in the guns that I have had, hard to impossible to touch the lands with a lot of bullets, especially poly tip or match bullets. Semi point bullets is what I went to which allowed me to touch the lands in the 223 and 22/250 that I had.

Triggers are adjustable to a point if you are happy with 3 lbs, you will be ok.

They are a very strong action, great extractor, extra gas ports just in case a case ruptures.

My 223 had an over size firing pin hole so I had the bolt bushed and made a Mach 4 out of it which functioned flawlessly.

Good luck!

I have a Howa 1500 S with a 24inch heavy barrel and I can get sub MOA accuracy out of it. I'm talking about grouping at about .5 or .6 MOA at 400 yards and about 1 MOA at 500 yards. However I believe that is due to the fact that I have 1:12 Twist and I'm using 52grain HP's by Black Hills at 500 yards and they drift a lot but I can easily hit a 10 inch circluar metal plate at that range all day long with it. Now a 3.5x3.5 inch squar plate is not as easily hit but it can be done if one dopes the wind and has range known.

What caliber are you shooting?
Thanks

Glenn

.223 Rem nothing special about the rifle other then the trigger is about 3lbs of pull... Breaks pretty cleanly nothing to right home about... Mostly I've just practiced alot with it... 3,500 rnds down the bore and I learned how get to the point I want it. My setup is totally sucky... It is a either fulky rifle or I'm just so used to the way it shoots that I know how to compensate for the Tasco-Trash Optics and black hills ammo.

I think my gun might be a one off deal but I think you should get around .8 MOA at 400 yards no problem from average Howa rifle... At least everyone I've heard of which is far from enough to make a true satstical statement of quality seems to shoot about .5-.8 MOA at 400 yards. Regardless of caliber. Now I know my mine does because I shoot a 3.5x3.5 inch metal target at that range and I've measured the impacts after a fresh coat of orange paint and it is alwasy about 3.0 to 3.25 inches from center to center and I'm talking like a 15-20 shot group. At 500 yards I paint the 10 inch target White and I tape five inch cardboard piece in the middle using doubled sided tape and paint the outter ring orange... And since the wind at the range is easily doped I can usually shoot most of my shots within the white 5 inch circle giving me about 1 MOA at 500 yards. Sometimes when I'm feeling cheecky I put the smaller target up at the 500 yard range but it is really hard to hit and I usually if I can hit it 10 or 15 times out like 3-4 times amount of attemtps that is if I'm pretty lucky, but the bigger target is a no brainer at that range. I think it has to do with the low BC of 52grainers and the windage most of all... But I would love try out one of those Super Sniper Scopes and see if perhaps the scope isn't a factor as well.

I am shooting this from a harris bi-pod...

Matt

I've never owned or fired a Howa but its been suggested to me by a couple of reputable gunsmiths here in Aus that the actions form a good basis for building a custom rifle on, having a reputation for being pretty straight and somewhat better consistency than the latest crops of Rem700 actions. I don't mean to create an unholy shitstorm by saying that out loud, dear Remington users. I own a custom REM700 myself.

The barrel, chambering job and inherent accuracy of the chosen calibre, not to mention the ammo quality are likely to make a much bigger difference in the rifle's success from a purely techical perspective - if you take out the other measly factors such as...for example, say, the shooter and the environment.

Whereabouts in Aus are you Matt? Drop me a pm or an e-mail if you want to touch base.

Yeah I've heard that Howa's are holding tighter tolerances too from many gunsmiths... Personally, I like it but I think if you want extreme accuracy you have to go completely custom.
