Howa Mini Action Trigger replacement

Rtheurer, Did you replace the plastic bottom metal, well plastic bottom anyway? I'm getting ready to order a bottom metal for mine and do the magazine where it will fit flush instead of sticking out. I bought the AT-1 stock but I want to put pillars in and bed it. It shoots pretty good now but I believe that will help some.

Yes I got the DIP one in the link above. It hangs onto the Magazine tighter so it does not rattle. And increases the pressure on the spring so it you don't drop the Magazine unexpectedly by bumping the lever.

Back to the original subject. You don't need to replace the trigger for a lighter pull. Order the spring kit from www.gunbloke.com. Cost is about $18 and takes about 10 minutes to install. The springs reduced mine from 3.5 to 1.5 pounds and is safe.

Does anyone here happen to know if the Howa Mini action ( 6.5 Grendel, 223, 204, 7.62X39) takes the same trigger at the larger Howa Short action with the HACT trigger?

Its not bad for a factory trigger but I was looking for something a little lighter. After running, Anschutz, Bix and Andy, Xtreme, CG, Jewel... You get to become a trigger snob... hard to go backwards.

Appreciate your help.

Russel
Everyone in this hobby knows that if you do not buy a soft market fully saturated over represented "widget" you can not find anything! Example you can find after market bolt bodies, bottom metal, stocks, triggers and tools for the Rem700 but almost nothing for a Ruger American. You can find all kinds of parts for a Ruger 10/22 all day long in fact you could build a Ruger 10/22 with out using any Ruger made parts not even the action but try that with a CZ 452 not happening! It would appear you have not suffered too much with a stock trigger.

If you look on youtube you will find step by step instruction on how to modify it to get a 1.5lbs. trigger pull
! When people complain about a rifle that cost what a fraction of the price of an Anschutz complain about a trigger I tend to laugh my butt off! The Howa is $241 from Buds and Grabagun wants $179 for it. An Aschuntz starts at Cheaper-than-dirt they start at $1025 and go up to $2250. So the Anschutz is 4x to 12.5x times the cost of the Howa! I am sure you could have someone custom make a trigger for it and still have money in the bank! It is like complaining about the back seats in a Toyota Camry not being as posh and comfortable as the back seat of your Maybach! LOL That is not a slight against Toyota either it is just that you are not comparing two items that are otherwise equal it is the classic apples to oranges. If you are going to go cheap you should know going in that it will likely be difficult to find support for it in the after market. I hate it too because a lot of the best guns have ZERO support in the after market and some that are not that great have all kinds of parts available for them it is just the way things work in real life....I hope that video helps. I think too many people make too much drama out of trigger pull weight and how slick a bolt moves and that it is funny and not much more than a distraction from what is really important. Creep, Over-Travel, Reset and how it breaks and consistency from shot to shot are all far more important than pull weight!

I would contact HOWA-USA and I would contact Timmney. The actions are functionally very similar with the action and bolt being shorter from mini to short action to standard length. I think but do not know for sure if they all use the same trigger. I would imagine they do since that would make the most sense from a design stand point that said real life seldom makes sense or is logical so my assumption is about worthless! LOL

I normaly go in 1/2 to 1/4 of a turn on springs. I measure the overall length and mark it on paper. I start with 1/2 turn to start and after each clip return the spring to the same over all length. After the first 1/2 turn I will normally clip in 1/4 turn increments until I get to a point that I think I am good. I always stop sooner rather than latter. I seldom take a stock trigger on any design lower than 1.5lbs.!! If I want lower I normally will just buy a Jewell or the like. In fact if I get to 2lbs. I normally stop I hate having to make or buy a new spring.

I hope that video helps! I do laugh at myself and shake my head at myself just as much as I laugh at my fellow brothers and sisters in the hobby. I do think we all lose sight of the obvious often! That said I have never nit picked a sub $300 rifle for it's trigger pull. My $149 H&R shotgun has a sloppy crunchy long mushy trigger that breaks cleanly once you get it to that point. Not once have I said to myself I should take this H&R $149 rifled slug gun apart and try to improve the trigger pull! It is the perfect tool for harvesting deer just as it is. It was not designed to be a sniper weapon, a BR gun, F-Class princess etc....If it aint broke sometimes we need to just leave it alone! LOL Trust me I have to stop myself at least 2x a year for the last 22 years from messing with it!

Thanks… I think?

I am shooting it in Competition and not a Deer/Hobby rifle. So there for it can not be left well enough along. Not to toot my own horn here, but with several National Records, State/Regional Championships, National Trophy's to the old Resume.... I prefer to improve the HACT trigger. A simple Query of what was out there was what I was looking for. Shooting at that level you learn to modify and improve equipment to your needs which I have been doing for twenty years now. We do it all the time. The little rifle with a New barrel shot so well I decided to make it a Match rifle. YOur welcome to giggle at the post if you want. It was a simple inquiry.
I should have know I was opening my self up to some ridicule by posting here.

Best of luck with your plinkers.
Russel.

Don't let him get to you,he just rambles off topic . Loves to talk about himself with no real input.

Timney recently came out with a replacement trigger for the Howa 1500 HACT. I have one in 6mm CM and it is quite a little shooter and I think the Timney will make it even better. Hopefully they have a replacement for the mini as well. If you "nag" enough to Timney they will eventually come around and build what you need if they think there is a demand. With all the calls and emails I sent them over the last year or so I guess they got the message.:D

How smoothe is the bolt operation of the Howa Mini as far as cocking and fore & aft movement? Wish they made a Hornet version. TIA

I got my Howa Mini about 5 weeks ago. The bottom metal/detachable mag is a polymer/fiber like plastic material so nothing impressive there. But I didnt expect a "Cadillac" for $300 on a brand new barreled action that included bottom metal and magazine. The action itself is very nice and smooth for the money. I had no issues timing the trigger in for very smooth bolt throw without losing hardly any firing pin fall.

Put a one piece picatinny scope base on it and installed the 1.5lb trigger kit. With a little extra work, I have the trigger breaking cleanly and safely at 12 oz every time with great consistency. Nothing like a Jewel or Bixn' Andy trigger of course, but for a factory trigger its actually pretty dang good.

Now just have to take off the factory 6.5 Grendel barrel, install the new custom 20 PPC barrel, bed it in the new stock, top it with a good optic, and she'll be ready to throw ledd downrange ;)

It's nice. Has some "cock on close" and could benefit from some trigger timing, but its not nearly as bad as most Remington 700s. The Howa is smoother than a 700 too because the bolt body has a "ringed" tooling finish (not sure if that's the technical term...) The rougher finish glides in the raceway a lot slicker than the smooth bolt finish or junky coatings Remington uses.

These are cool little actions with some great features. Always wanted a walk around. 22PPC. May just have to do it. What tennon thread do they run?

Thanks guy,

Paul
Its a 1mmx something. Im doing one now in 20PPC and the thread is very close to a 26tpi, so close in fact that I am converting mine to a 7/8-26. That's .015 larger diameter than the metric.
I made a test stub using a 26 tpi at the factory diameter and you can hand screw it in over half an inch before binding.

I asked, and the Timney #611 is the replacement for the 1500 mini action...

I've never found a single Timney trigger I liked. They basically just copy the factory triggers and they are no better. Waste of money in my opinion.

Never tried a Jard trigger but they are making triggers specifically built for the Howa Mini action in 3 different pull weight ranges. Supposedly pretty nice triggers. Might have to try out the 6-8 oz. trigger
