Howa 1500 Trigger

Don't have a line drawing, but if I remember correctly (good luck with that!!) the single stage Howa trigger needs to come completely apart to change out the weight spring. Might be the same with the factory HACT two stage.

The reason I ask is that a friend dropped his 308 off and the firing pin is falling/not re-setting on bolt close and the safety locks up (will not move) when this happens.. I didn't want to go into it without a diagram.
PS... this is the single stage trigger

Check its mounting for crud or something between the receiver and trigger, and the screw that holds it on. Check for crud/rust in the trigger itself. I don't think it is possible to adjust a factory trigger so low or light to cause what you are describing, unlike a Remington pre Walker trigger. Of course it could also be something more involved, but check the basic stuff first.

I flushed it with Ronson and gave it a quick look over. It looks to me like there is a piece (screw maybe) missing from the back end of the trigger. There's a spring (fairly large) that's just hanging there with no support.

of that spring? The drawing I posted is actually a very early 1500 trigger from a Smith & Wesson/Howa 1500. Newer triggers might be a little different. If memory serves, the spring you are looking at is trapped in its bore from the other side, with no screw there.

Its been a few years, so if I remember correctly, if the sear engagement screw which is #28 is in too far, (it pushes the top of the trigger forward to adjust sear engagement) the sear won't engage the trigger therefore not holding the firing pin back. Also, with the trigger pushed that far forward, the safety plunger #29 I think, won't be able to move in front of the trigger to block its forward movement. You can only take the creep out up to the point that the trigger hits the safety plunger. The spring with no screw is the sear return spring.

Thank You Kendog and Bill.....I re-flushed it and blew it out with air and a couple small pieces of brass came out. Then after checking the trigger adjustment screws the front was totally loose and the rear was in too far. Reset those and adjusted pull weight.
