How to setup a 6BRX ?

Hey Guys,

First time poster, loooonnng time lurker. Life has finally slowed down enough for me to get back into long range again. I want to build a 6 BRX based on a Savage Target action.

Here is my plan. Savage Target Action, Bartlein 5R barrel with NO NUT, A Stockade Long range-Benchrest stock and top it off with a Nite Force Benchrest scope.

This will be for 600 -1000yd.

Now I need details? I have questions on the reamer. I will order one from Dave Kiff but need some things figured out. I KNOW I want it set up for Lapua brass, no turn necks (.272 maybe .271) but how much freebore?

I want to run 105 -107 grain bullets. .100 free bore or .110-.115?

Bartlein will be doing the chambering, I just need to figure out what specs I need.

Should I get a go, nogo gage made while having the reamer made?

Have other questions as well, but will take it slowly so I can get it all digested.

Ken

Edit... OK, after much more surfing and reading, I realize the neck is much shorter on the 6 BRX vs the 6BR or even the Dasher. SOOO...If I want to keep the base of the boat tails as close to the doughnut or slightly above it, that means even MORE throat length??

Right??

call up bartlein--they should have several reamers for the brx. if not then they will work out a deal with you on a reamer. i will be doing about .110 freebore on my 6BR

I have emailed them a few times but hat to continue bugging them so much untill I actually am ready to order.

6BRX vs the 6 BR... The 6 BR has a much longer neck than the BRX. SOOO ,,,with the shorter neck of the 6BRX, would this not mean I would need a much deeper throat than a 6 BR to get the bullet up out of the case and up to the doughnut?

You definately are on the right track. I am at round 3 on BRX reamers. Round 1 was a Kiff reamer that was the original Bob Crone design. This was a suprize since Remington brass has not been in vogue for many years. The std Lapua 6BR brass would not chamber in the brand new chambered barrel, due to the 1.550" chamber length. I am still in dismay that Kiff did this. I have heard this same senario from other Kiff patrons. I called him back and ordered another reamer with longer chamber length and a longer freebore. The original reamer used a Kiff suggested .104" freebore for the 105 VLD which I found to be way to short. My second reamer was ordered with a .132". I just sent back the original with a rework order and had him grind a .140" freebore and make the chamber length 1.565" I think I may be real happy with this one.

Now were talking! That is some of the info I am looking for. Since the 6BRX is a wildcat, getting dimensions is different from person to person. I did find this while surfing the articles..

"We used a Dave Kiff 6BRX reamer with a .271" neck, and .187" freebore. (The short BRX neck requires extra freebore; a standard 6BR reamer set for 107 SMKs might have .110" freebore). "
