how to read

a Lyman's bore scope pics? Is there a post on bore scope pictures showing what u are looking at? how to ID the different spots of build ups?

Big Dog, best question I have sneje jn on here in a long time. I would like to learn more about what I see also. I hope there is some good answers, info to follow.l get tired of what load will shoot in my new gun. Well, go try some different loads you will find out. I guess some shooters are just like others, give me what you have I don't want to work for it or put any effort out. Ok, I am off Mt rant. Great question.

I am not trying to minimize your plight here at all, and maybe pics with descriptions may help, but realize, almost all bore scope owners are self taught.
Clean your barrel good, inspect it, take a note of what you see and measure where it is. Go shoot 10 or 20 rds and inspect again. Is it just black carbon, or do you see copper fanning out in a groove? Then shoot more and monitor buildups.
When I first got one, every tooling mark in the barrel was the end of the world. Today I can fire a new barrel 10-14 times, inspect, clean, test a few more and look again. I can make a decision if I want to JB a spot to make things easier or carry on.
I guess I'm saying, don't get too daunted over the unknown, it will all fall into place.

Learn by looking. Also with a friend that has done the same.
I was told about leed cracking, alligator cracking, leaded spots/strips, copper strips, tooling marks, cleanerfluid remnants ....then when I looked I saw !

I'm one if those that don't expect a used barrel to be "new clean" kinda like a used shovel, knock the chunks off, keep it from rusting !

In my experience, those are the barrels that die early/sooner.
Ran-over fouling creates hard layers. Ran-over hard layer creates aggressive barrel wear.
But we all own our own barrels, so each to our own how we want to care for them !.!.!
