How to practice?

I am new to 600-1000 yard shooting. If I only have access to a 300 yard range, how would you use that to practice for mid-range and long range? I made it up to Elk River (600 yards)for the wind clinic this year. Maybe buy some 300 yard f class targets?
Thanks Troy

Try tracing circles with a washer on meat wrapping paper. The white paper makes seeing the bullet holes easy from 300yrds. Sleepy Gator may have some practice targets for you to download.

Hi Troy... If you have access to some form of "wind-flags" (even a stick with surveyors tape) >> place one close to you, at 100, 200 and 300. Then if you are shooting "F-Class" >>> "pretend" you are in a match and let'er rip.. I am very fortunate to live relatively close to Bayou Rifles where we shoot 300, 600 and 1000 yards. During the week, a few of my friends and I go to the range to "sight-in" and "pretend" we are in a match! This helps tremendously. Also 2 hours away is "Golden Triangle Gun Club" in Beaumont. The range is fairly "sheltered" and me and a friend attend their 600 yard F-Open matches every month. Because it is sheltered, I use it for "trigger time" and to test out loads.. In Texas, especially in the Houston area, we have access to several excellent ranges.. I hope this helps..

Here's a couple of 300 yard F-Class practice targets. The scoring rings are the correct size. Print them at actual size and they should be fine. I use the 5X target when there is little wind and the 1X otherwise. Enjoy.

For the past two weeks I have been trying smallbore practice. I have had several friends tell me that that will hone in my Center fire rifle handling. I have been shooting at 600 yard reduced f class targets at 50 yards and 100 yards that I printed. And have also shot at our local smallbore match. Will see if it helps, I know it can't hurt. And it's cheaper to shoot. :D

Thanks Sleepy for helping the guy out... I have a friend in New York (Peru Rod and Gun) that uses your targets for practice all the time... He says they are excellent!

You can also use the 3" shoot N C- targets from Birchwood Casey. http://www.amazon.com/Birchwood-Casey-Shoot-N-C-3-Inch-Bulls-Eye/dp/B000GX7Y50/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1373642120&sr=8-2&keywords=shoot+n+c+3

Practice controlled speed. You can do it at home, especially in the off-season. Set up like you would at a match. There will be times when you want/need to run them. Dry fire with trigger control, same POA, body position, etc....but build up your speed doing it. You may prefer to pick your way thru a match, but if you ever need to run them then you will have the skill-set.

With a decent rimfire and quality ammo, you can get a lot of practise out to 300yds.

With target scaling, 300yds is very similar to 1000yds with a 308. 200yds at 500m. 100yds at 300m.

I use the same targets I will compete with and the same scope. Set up the rifle as close to your F class rifle so you have the same feel BUT make the rifle as light as you can.

Why? You want to maintain your form and a light rifle will show inconsistencies in grip, cheek and follow through. Any small change will be a big change on target. Great learning tool.

Good luck.

Jerry

PS - SHOOT LESS. It is all too common to send lead downrange and walk in your zero. BAD practise and will really screw you up during a match. Take 17 or 22rds and shoot for score. Do everything the same as if you are in a match. That focuses your practise with the same goals and stresses of a match. Track how you do and hopefully, you will see steady improvements. Use wind flags

Where can you find/buy 22 ammo ?
And at what prices ?

That stuff is extinct in my neck of the woods, and when I do see some for sale, it is at ungodly high prices (like $70 for 500).

Brunos, when they have it. It's pretty reasonable compared to others.

I am in Canada so the supply is different as most of this stuff come from Europe.

$70/500 is a great price up here for decent Eley, SK, RWS or Lapua ammo :-)

Sleepygator, thanks for the targets. I found them on the main website and printed some to take to the range. I thought it was going to be a piece of cake. I just imagined my best group centered there on the X. Not the case.
My range has a hump in the 100-200 range, even with the shorter grass I can not see the 300 from prone :(
I will take a target backer on 8' pole for next time.
I put 3 flags up for wind, more wind than usual at this range, normally VERY sheltered. I tried to shoot in my condition. Shooting for score with the holding off will take me more practice..... I was using up some old ammo that was a little better than 1 MOA at 100yards, but not as good as my other load. I used a couple sighters and then did a 5 shot for score. I was chasing my tail, 3 of the 7 disappeared in the black but I had 2 high right and 2 low left I caused by some miscalculation.
It was a lot of fun, and did not have to drive 3 plus hours. It was also humbling, how can I do well at 600 or 1000 if I can not put them all in the 10 at this range? Practice....
Thanks
Troy
