How to ease the bolt lift on 700s ?

How are we easing the bolt lift on the 700 Rem.Some are good from the factory then I get one that is very hard to lift,I am talking about an empty chamber

With aftermarket bolt handles that extend the radius. A google search on "remington extended bolt handle" shows many options.

Jeff

Sparingly grease the lugs, cocking piece cam (where the bolt moves the cocking piece to the rear upon lifting the bolt), and cam area at the base of the bolt handle where it first contacts the action upon lifting the handle. Not a complete answer but certainly helps and protects the lugs from galling.

Long bolt handles do not solve the problem. I know about being on the long side of the tetter totter. It all has to do with bolt timing. I send mine to Dan Armstrong, Dans 40X, and it is fixed.

Butch, do you have a link? My 700 based rifle takes a lot to open. Have to hold it down to keep it tracking. Later! Frank

Heavy bolt lift is a symptom, not a problem. Send the bolt to Dan Armstrong (Dans40X) and you will be amazed at the difference.

What does he do to make it open easier? The force required to open the bolt is a product of firing spring tension and cocking ramp shape. Or do you mean extract easier? Timing will help that.

He has many tricks to make it open easier. I blueprint my bolts and it makes a difference, but Dan is the master. There is more to timing a bolt than extraction alone.

I did one for a friend today and he was very pleased with the difference. His was a custom action, but it's more noticeable on factory actions.

That didnt answer my question. I know about the different aspects of bolt timing. What is done to make the bolt open easier?

I am not going to tell you what Dan does on an open forum. If you want you can send a bolt to him and it will be better when you get it back.

But frankly, if you really know about the different aspects or bolt timing, you already know how he does it. ;)

This made me laugh out loud.

Get yourself some fine lapping compound ( I don't know if some J B Brobst will do ) and put it on the threads where the cocking piece threads into the bolt body and in the threads of the bolt body and put them together and put it in the action ( grease the lugs ) and open and close the bolt about 30 times and take it apart and clean off the lapping compound and put a little oil or grease on the trheads and put it together and feel the difference. If you want it smoother do it again. That is how I did mine.

I don't know what the secret is but just use common sense.

This might give you less friction but will make it sloppy, which will create other issues such as pin lift when engaged on trigger sear.

Taking out the spring will drastically reduce bolt lift, but that does not make it a good idea. ;)

Eric, does he need just the bolt or bolt and receiver.

I'm not sure. Contact Dans40X and he will fill you in on the details.
Maybe he will chime in on this thread.

This made me laugh out loud ;), as my question was rhetorical. Bolt timing does not reduce bolt lift.
