How to best clean scope lens when dusty or fingerprinted?

I have just bought a couple of used scoped that need cleaning of the lenses mainly how can you safely do this? Thanks PG

I used compressed air to blow the major debris out,, then use Leupold Lenspen with the fine brush end to get anything left after blowing, then lightly fog the glass by blowing your breathe on it and use the other end of lens pen. Repeat as necessary. Will not hurt the glass.

Thanks for that video. I headed straight to Brownells and added those pump dispensers to my 'favorites' list. One each for acetone & patchout. Maybe another for ?

If you don't mind using a spray; Invisible Glass by Stoner is terrific. A clean microfiber cloth is a must. Has no effect on lense treatments.

Instead of acetone, how about alcohol instead. Alcohol is what is in those lens wipes you get with a new pair of glasses.

Acetone would work but I am fumble fingered and would probably drip some of that stuff on my stock finish or paint. That would probably make a real mess and P&ss me off.

You can buy a big box of Zeiss lens cleaning tissues from Walmart. Use the brush in the Lenspen or something to blow the dust off as mentioned above before using the Zeiss alcohol tissues. They come in small individual packets.

I bought a handfull of those packets heavily discounted at WM and man o man did they ever leave heavy residue marks. Both on my eyeglasses and my scope lenses. It was very difficult to remove as well.

They do that to you Butch?

I used to work in a lab with several high end microscopes. When they were professionally cleaned and serviced they used equal parts of ethanol ( everclear) isopropanol ( rubbing alcohol) and acetone. They used a special lens paper like the ziess wipes found at walmart but a microfiber cloth should work fine. That is what is what I use on mine.

The zeiss wipes work great,if they are leaving residue ,it is from what either got on the lens and was left there for awhile or you got tobacco residue from smokers on the lens. It comes off,but you have to keep rewiping the area to remove all the tars that float around.Myself being a smoker,I know all about residue.

I have to wonder if the discounted wipes you got at WM were Zeiss brand, they also carry B & L. There is all the difference in the world between the two. I got some of the B & L at WM when I couldn't find the Zeiss one time, that will be the last time. The Zeiss is the only brand I have found that leaves NO streaks. For cleaning your lenses, I would recommend similar to some of the others. Use canned air to blow the bulk of it off, then brush with a lens brush, then finish with a Zeiss wipe or two, as needed.

They were blue & white zeiss packaged wipes. Used them on my carbonate lensed eyeglasses and the residue was so nasty I really had to work to get it off.

Just a heads up about this advice. On one of my many trips to the Bushnell service center, the technician used Acetone to break the grip of the factory adhesive used to hold the lenses in place. It took very little and he didn't leave it in place very long for it to do it's job. I'd hate to see someone damage their scope. Doesn't the Leupold Lenspen use minute amounts of jewellers rouge on the "cup" like tip to remove finger prints? Maybe this is a good alternative to a liquid?
