How to Attach Mirage Shields?

FWIW, I should have a few .010 fiberglass mirage shields in a few days. I put black vinyl on one side but will probably leave that on the bottom as the top will be more of a matte than the vinyl side and give less glare. I put this in with a batch of flag material that I dropped off at the lazer shop a little over a week ago I think. I had him do a few for me a while back and like them so I used up what little black vinyl I had and am going to have a couple of dozen more this week. Just about anything will work. I've seen and used an old target cut into about a 2 inch wide strip taped to the scope and bbl before in a pinch. I liked the fiberglass mainly because it's light and durable, and can be rolled up and put in a small tupperware bowl or similar. Aluminum blind ones don't deal with being rolled up at all and they get pretty ratty looking over time. I'll probably retail these at like 10 bucks but will probably give more away than I sell, to be honest. They are 2x24, in this batch and can easily be cut down to whatever length.
 
I just took a piece of venetian blind and used JB weld to stick it on the barrel, figured it worked as a "cooling fin"

If you don't want to attach anything to the barrel, I have another suggestion. If you have access to old style X-rays, you can use the end of your scooe as a template, roll the X-ray into a tube and tape the seam. Slip it over the objective of the scope. They are lightweight and work great.
If you don't have X-ray materials, I've seen shooters use a rolled up target. It doesn't have to be a tube, curl it under the objective and tape it on the scope.
Otherwise, just use velcro tabs on a shield to the barrel. We had a guy at our club who used laminated paper with designs. Very lightweight.
Hardest part is getting the sticky goo off the barrel if you remove the velcro. Fans also work well.

I use an odd voting sign cut 2.5 x however long needed & Velcro. I also have a rechargeable fan from Amazon. Orange camping fan. It will run off a battery pack also.
barrel "monkeys" make you think your scope isn't focused.
 
I believe that the heat under the scope does as much damage to the sight picture as the heat coming off the barrel in front of the scope. Feel the bottom of the scope after a 20 round relay. The internals of the scope get hot and bam. My mirage shield goes all the way back to the receiver. I hold it on the scope with a big fat rubber-band that people use as wrist bands. Two is better than one. The shield doesn't touch the barrel, kind of free floats.
 
Lets make this simple (KISS method). Take a 3 small pieces of scotch tape fold in half stick on barrel. Now take 3" strip of target paper and stick it to the tape on barrel. Viola mirage shield.
 
After reading all the posts, no one has mentioned that when the Velcro tabs get hot, they come loose from the bbl. I've tried multiple times and it never fails that the mirage shield comes loose in the middle of a string of fire. Being a sling shooter, it's a real PITA to deal with that issue. If there is something out there to solve this issue, I'm all ears.

Find a sheet of thin transparent flexible plastic and cut a 2-2.25" strip out to fit your barrel and use velcro to attach. Its easy on and easy off and rolls up in a ball for storage in your gun case. Like the stuff they use under the collars of new shirts.
 
There are all kinds of different qualities of velcro. Good stuff won't come off but yes, heat does affect the adhesive on the cheaper stuff.

I've never had one come off unintentionally, and my barrels get plenty hot during 20+ shot strings in F-Class matches. In fact, the Velcro squares are even somewhat of a bitch to remove when you're actually trying to remove them. I believe the Velcro brand can be found at just about any craft shop, hardware store, Walmart, Amazon, etc.

Like Ned, I have pretty much the opposite problem - getting the velcro squares off is a bear, especially once they've been 'cooked' a few times.

For me, the secret to getting them to really stick - besides surface prep to make sure it's clean/dry - is that I roll up some rubber bands on the squares pretty tight, and leave them overnight to 'clamp' the velcro down evenly while the adhesive sets up. Cut the rubber bands off, and those velcro squares should stay put as long as you want.

Not if you clean the barrel good with Alcohol and then use the industrial strength Velcro. Don’t use the cheap fuzzy Velcro. I shoot in 100F weather in direct sunlight and I’ve never had an issue with melting or falling off Velcro tabs.
