How to adjust scope turrets between clicks without holding over

I am aware there is slop in the system Greg, so I don't know for sure, but it sure seemed like is was real. Will retune with this different powder/bullets and reassess the 1/8th MOA click matter.

Have you checked your scope rings.Once when I was younger I over tighten my scope down and I could not get it to adjust right. After I back the screws off some it worked well.

hunter243gsk, thanks for the scope rings overtightening suggestion. Just checked the scope rings (bat); the scope ring screws are OK, not overtightened. The scope rings are lapped and the scope is leveled and seated in JG Weld. Scope should be OK.

So, the max that it can be off between 1/8 MOA clicks is 1/16th MOA. That is 0.0625 MOA.

With all respect, I suggest that there are other, larger, sources of error in your system.

Just out of curiosity, what kinds of groups are you getting up to this point, not a happy accident, but average, for your best load, and what are you using to look at what the wind is doing, between the bench and target?

OP,,,,dont woory,,,by the time you think about it the wind will have the bullets hittin 1/2" or maby 1/2 foot in the other direction,,,,I wish my guns shot well enuff for me to keep em within 1/8 moa predictably,,,if its hittn a lil' low ,,then hold a lil' high,,,,,,Roger

Cassidy,

If I am reading this right. You off the dot by only 1/2 click, high or low at 250 yds. If that is all your off you will be fine. Conditions will change things more than that. If you are going to shoot 750 to 1000yds, the wind, light, air temp, etc. will have you off more than that. Can you hit the dot at 100yds? If so. zero at 100yds and click it up.

Gstaylorg - I think you're right, holding appears to be the only option since there appears to be no way to adjust the turret to absolutely adjust the zero between clicks. However, the main problem as others have pointed out is to get the barrel tuned so I'm not simply losing the the 1/8th MOA turret adjustment within the group size.

Boyd- I did't keep the target from the last range shoot because I was zeroing the scope and also fun-shooting the remaining rounds, but with the next tune test attempt which I might be able to do this weekend, if you want I can email the tuning target to you. Like Erik suggests, this one will be 100 yds to minimize wind effect at 250yds; there is usually about 10 mph winds from 5 o'clock over my right shoulder at the range where I shoot (Best of West range and Liberty Hill, Tx).

Mark S - you read my thread right - was trying to adjust the scope to zero between clicks, but I think this is not feasible on my scope. Main problem now is to try to find the optimum powder/load/bullet for this barrel. Will try another tune probably this weekend.

Thanks for all your comments!

Cassidy, no to be impertinent, but are you telling me that you are attempting to make determinations about the centering that can be accomplished with 1/8 MOA turret adjustments without the benefit of a set of wind flags set up between you and the target? I know that for field work, and many kinds of competition this is not an option, but for testing, I believe in eliminating or at least being able to observe the magnitude of variables to the greatest extent possible. IMO, without the ability to gauge the wind accurately, on a real time basis, I fear that you may be whizzing into the gale ;-) ...and of course I would like to see that target. Check your PMs.

Boyd - there's no flags at that range except a very few out near 750 and 1000 yds as I recall. I use the grass (where there is some) as best I can.

When I was starting at upgrading my shooting, an ongoing process that started when reloading manuals were written on stone tablets, and there was no internet, I used simple sticks, with surveyors' tape tied and taped to their tops. They helped immensely. Today, the total cost of materials would be about $20 for all the materials. I suggest that you would benefit from doing the same. Mine were about 6" tall, because the longer ribbons were easier to see.

Boyd - I'll give the surveyors flags a try. Question is will the range officer allow shooters to put them up.
