How safe would this be to convert ??

Savage makes a cool little single shot break open shot gun. The 301 Turkey shooter thumbhole stock.. Anyway I'd love to have one w a 38/357 pistol cartridge & the 256 win mag. barrel at say 22 inches long Any thoughts on how why or Not To Do this project . mikeinct

Shot gun pressures run 12,000 to 14,000 psi. .357 can run up to and over 34,000 psi. Doesn't look like a very good match.

Without being able to examine one, I think it would be hard to condemn the idea outright. I doubt Savage would manufacture a gun to take "only" shotgun pressures. My first thought was that this model looks much like the New England Handi-Rifle, which was obviously chambered for higher pressure rounds than even .357. My question for Mike is, do you make a rifled insert for the original or do you have the capability to machine the new barrel/hinge block/etc...

It seems just as robust as those old H&R single shots. I cannot put in print what I saw a fellow do to one of those old .410 shotguns. My plan is to use the bottom hinge/extractor/chamber and just enough of the barrel from the shotgun: fitted to a properly chambered full size [20 to 22"] rifle barrel. mikeinct

Look up Savage/Stevens 219 and 220 single shot rifles. They have been made for a long time but have been out of production for a long time. The most recent iteration of that design was the H&R, NEF, Rossi and others.

Thanks to all for chiming in. I ran down every comment. Conclusion , I have two thidty five caliber rifles to play with. Bunch of thirty cals I got to make do better with cast bullets. The gunsmith & a reamer maker are going to try to make my .257 goofy project work. I wanted to run this single shot down, but I have other projects to finish. Thanks for your help, MikeinCt

not that Im for it BUT bolt or breech thrust is important. The shotgun may be at 8 to 12k PSI and its surface area of the base is huge compared to the surface area od the 357 base . Ive not done the math but since rifle inserts have been around for a lomg time , Id consider doingthe math and getting a good shotgun , with good locking .

H&R has two different actions, going by memory an SB1 (shotgun only) and an SB2 (rifle). They do not recommend putting rifle barrels on the shotgun frame.

Ask Savage what they think.

The trigger on all the break open guns are simple design and heavy . With some work they can be improved, but don’t expect much . Id say go for it . Scope it .

SB1 could be fitted with a limited assortment of calibers, 357 and 44 mags if the frame was made after 1990.
SB2 came in the full gamut of calibers, including shotguns...
