How ''Premium'' is Federal Premium Brass?

Hmmm??? Federal doesn't produce "Premium" brass separate from their other brass. Guess you'd have to call ALL of their brass "Premium"??? ;)

You are looking at the present, not the past!!!
They had three grades!!!

Federal Brass and Ammo (yellow brass), Premium Brass and ammo (nickel plated in green and white box) , and another line of brass that you are unaware of, unless you lived in that era and happened to see the ads and/or Federal fliers! The better than Mil Spec Match, FEDERAL MATCH in 223, 308, and 30-06 (nickel plated in mostly red box with white)!!
I believe these MATCH cases were equal to, if not better quality, than Lapau today!!!
This is based on statistical analysis of accuracy of loads and analysis of my shooting skills (prone position, bipod, with homemade sand bag made using lead shot bag, shooting a 700 BDL 24", 1:9.25 twist, Varmint Special in 7-08 using SGK 160SPBT loads)!! I set my target Probability of cloverleafing 5 shots!! Using both Statistics, the PROBABILITY calculation was: 7 shots needed to cloverleaf 5 shots at 100!! The Probability proof was 3-7 shot groups.
1 group had 2 flyers, 2 groups had no flyers!! Yeah, 2-7 shot groups under 3/16" MOA!!! I BEAT THE CALCULATED ODDS!!

I’d much rather use lake city, Remington, Winchester or any of those cheap alternatives than federal.

How their gold medal crap shoots decent I will never know because the brass is shit. Hard. Thick necks.

I’d eject and forget.

Federal primers, yes. Brass, not so much.

Back in the days, I had Both once fired LC Match and new Federal Match!! The Federal loads shoot better than the LC loads into the Paper!! The downside was the weak primer pockets of Federals and the LC necks cracked!! Annealing was new to the reloader back then!!! Annealing was using a propane touch until a dull orange glow and then knocking over the case into the water bath it was standing in and avoiding knocking over the remaining cases that were still standing!!!

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, IT SUCKS!!!

I guess everyone has their deal. Me, I wouldn’t pick federal 308 brass up off the ground unless I was desperate, as in zombie apocalypse, as in Obama pelosi Biden and Harris were all co-presidents, life is too short.

If lapua, Peterson, adg Norma or alpha makes brass, just use it or you’ll be missing out.

Winchester blue bag 223 is good, maybe some others. Remington saum.

Peterson, ADG, and Alpha didn't exist then!! Norma and Lapau only made European cartridge back in those days!!! Pick it up if it is Nickel, check head stamp for MATCH, pitch if it isn't!! You would be surprise with the uniformity of OLD 308 FEDERAL MATCH!!! Better on the paper compared to LC Match!!

You won’t have to worry about me picking it up, you can have it all. Peterson srp is all I use now. If I’m ever hungry enough for this federal I figure I will have bigger problems. Components are too expensive to waste on shit brass. It’s not 1986 anymore. 308 is close to a buck a squeeze, ain’t sending a juggernaut down range from junk brass.

Totally agree!!! Times have changed!!! Back in 80s, it cost me right at a dime and a nickel a shot for 7-08 and 7-8 cents for 223!!! Once fired military cases were a penny for 223 and around 2 pennies for 308!!! Sorting the barrel of 308 was a 3cents per piece!!!

The best part of that ERA was almost all reloading supplies were available at the local sporting goods stores and gun shops!!! I had a pops gun store that open at 7:00 in the evening and closed at 9:30!! Us gun nuts would go to buy supplies and spend the rest of the time talking guns and reloading!!!!
