How often do you practice?

Weather is just starting to break around here. I’ve been out shooting the last two days. It wasn’t pretty. I’m wondering how often others try and get to the range. If I don’t get trigger time every three or four days, my results suffer.

Would dry firing be an option for you?

Otherwise, I've found in any of the sports I've competed in - 2 days a week will just maintain my skill level; need 3 or more to improve. I think the better you get at it, the more often practice is needed to just maintain the skill level.

I get to the range to shoot once a week and once in a while a second time in a week. I not only enjoy the shooting, I enjoy the process of precision reloading.

I use my extra rounds from matches to practice. We have matches monthly so one practice in between matches and some dry fire practice. I’d probably practice more if components were available but have barely enough for matches.

Since I am not really a very good shooter, I try to be at my home club every Sunday, working on everything.

I am very fortunate to be a member of The Tomball Gun Club.

If you shoot in Competition, you have to practice and tune the set up exactly the same way you do in a Match.

I practice about once a week with my rifles. With my conceal carry pistols I try and usually do live fire practice twice a week.

What JimPg says. I pretty much shoot at least 1 (sometimes 2) matches every weekend. Best practice there is. Now at almost 75 what I need to practice most is tightening my rest, bringing the correct ammo, the bolt that matches the gun......The list goes on. Practice without flags is a waste. Tuning without flags is a waste.

+1^^^

Especially regarding use of flags. Practicing outside of matches, I try to work on proper bench set up and bench manners in general. WD

I kinda think focused practice is more important than frequency, but maybe it just depends on the shooting game we are into.

For PRS, I like to start each outing with a zero confirmation at 3 distances, like 300, 500 and 750 yards. I like to record the findings and weather at the time and compare the results relative to the Kestrel estimates and see if the Kestrel needs to be tweaked.

Once that is out of the way I like to step into more of a wind call mode, where I make a wind call and a shot to confirm. I do that for a while, then move on to barricade.

On the barricade I first mess around with set up and stability in a few positions, then try a mock stage or two. 300 yards is plenty for this because I'm really working on my ability to find the target on time and break the shot. It complicates things to evaluate if this is done at longer ranges.

F Class on the other hand can only be done the way F Class is done. I don't know of a way to break it down to shorter distances and without someone marking targets. (Unless I buy an acoustic system)

Weekly.

We shoot 1,000 yard F Class on Wednesday mornings. Testing and Benchrest as well during the week.

For me It's a minimum of once per week sometimes twice with precision rifles and often another time during the week with pistols and or AR's.

Have a great day!

When I was chasing a shield, I tried to practice 2X a week, primarily standing (which i always sucked at) and I worked on all positions every day for muscle memory while dry-firing. Switched to an AR in early 1994 when JLK had 80gr projectiles...got my 3 gold medals and went out.

Switched to prone shooting and would practice position every day. Added a SCATT to the mix in year 2000. Would fire at the range once a week, generally on Wednesdays. If I could, I would get to wherever the match was being held on a Friday afternoon to verify my zero and foul the barrel in. That latter point didn't do Jack Schidt because in many matches (that I won), I would invariably lose a nine on my first shot for record...clean it the rest of the way :)

I don’t practice, I just tune when it’s time
