How much MOA needed for a scope for a .308 up to 1000yds?

I am thinking about a Remington Tactical in .308. I would like (just for fun) attempt some 1000 yd shots. How much MOA adjustment is needed ? Any suggstions on scopes $ 800.00 or less (if possible). Thanks for your replies.

From a 100 yard zero, bank on about 32 MOA of drop. Obviously depends on your load and atmospherics, but that is the rough order of magnitude. So, a 20 MOA base is probably necessary, unless your scope has upwards of 70 MOA of adjustment.

Sightron SIII is good, or Vortex Viper. Those are probably some of the main options in that price range

I mentioned the Sightron because I do have some personal experience with one... that's what I have on my .338LM. Vortex is great too although I have no experience with the Vipers. I have a Vortex Razor HD on my .308, but that's kind of out of the OP's budget.

That 20 MOA base solves a lot of problems. Those Burris signature rings with the inserts are also an option.

Something along the lines of a Sightron SIII 8x32 with a 20MOA base should get you there.

Pretty much spot on. For a few more dollars you can step up to the 10x50.

I find I seldom use more than 30X even at 1000 yards. My Nightforce Competition does 15-55X, seldom set it higher than 30X.

A 20 MOA scope base with decent glass is enough. a straight scope base will probably not be enough for most scopes.

My somewhat recent experience with just this scenario. Purchased a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x (love it) to put on my Savage 12 308 FTR. Scope has 65 MOA elevation total. Added Nightforce 20 MOA rail just to be sure. Worked up a load for 1000 yds based upon information here and elsewhere. Started with SMK 155 Palma (2156) and got them humming at 3020 fps with 8208XBR. Had 41 MOA in elevation to scopes mechanical limit from 100 yd zero. Should have had more based upon simple addition, but did not. Ballistics programs suggested I would need around 30 MOA to 1000 yds. Had not shot at 1000 before, but tried it out at 880 and needed 24 MOA which was close to what ballistics calculated. Though I'd be GTG. Riiight.

Day finally arrived to shoot my 1st match at 1000. I was pumped. I ended up needing 3 MOA more than my scope had. As someone mentioned, at the mechanical extremes of scopes, they may not move a true 1/4 MOA per click. I ended up backing down 2 MOA and using the reticule hash marks for POI. Also at mechanical extremes, windage adjustments gets drastically "boxed in". Had to aim 10-12 in on neighboring target to curve my bullets into the X-ring. When wind let off, bullet went between my target and neighbors. When wind picked up, missed between targets on other side. It's windy in ND. Match was a learning experience, fun overall, but I got owned.

Purchased Burris Sig Z-rings with inserts when I got home. When I returned to the 1000 yd line (with a different bullet). I needed 29.5 MOA to get to 1000. The inserts gave me room to spare. Now they are on all of my scope/rifles.

So, how much MOA will you need? Well in 308, I've needed as little at 29 and as "high" as 44.
Hope this helps,
Drew

I'm replacing my 20 with a 30 moa base that I just bought off here last week. I have been in the very top of my 12-42x56 N.F. BR scope at 1000 and don't care for it. I use all my magnification power has often as possible.

Depending on barrel length and bullet weight being shot. With a 26" barrel 155 and 168s may go trans sonic before reaching 1000 yds. The 175 and 180s will just make it. With 200 and 210s you need to achieve 2600fps to stay super sonic at 1000 yds. Some Night Force scopes don't have enough elevation to achieve the 37 MOA needed to reach a 1000 yds. When I shot 210s I used 40 moa bases and a Night force would reach 1200 yds. Barely. With a Sightron there is approximately twice as much elevation as with a Nightforce.
