How Much Heat in the Barrel ???

Question for the masses.

When you shoot, how much can you let the barrel warm up?

I will shoot until the barrel is slightly more than warm to the touch then let it cool off again. I have never used a temp gun...

Is there a general rule of thumb to use to keep the barrel from over heating? How does this vary between a heavy varmint barrel vs a zero taper barrel?

I have never shot in a contest, but how many shots do you generally shoot in a given time frame?
