How low can I go?

I have a 1:10 twist barrel 6BR barrel and am wondering how low in bullet weight I can go? I can find light weight bullets but the 105 Amax and 107 Sierras are harder to find.

It should be good for anything up to 100 grain. Might turn the really light ones a little hard. You probably can't push them fast enough in a BR to make them pop. Matt

It will be fine with lighter bullets. Your problem will be if you continue to look for the 105-107's, you will find them....and they won't do well from a 10 twist.

+1 agree with the above post.

With a 10 twist I've found 70gr-90gr to work best. :) WD

how low meaning weight? there is a 55 gr nosler bullet that will shoot in a 10 twist but will probably have to jump to your lands quite a bit, depending on the freebore in your gun. berger makes a 60 gr bullet that really shines in my 14 tw with a short freebore, so i can seat these into the lands. there seems to be a harmony between twist and bullet weight and a 10 tw probably shoots best with 80-95 gr, maybe 100 gr bullets.

teacher, I've had really good luck with the Berger 80 grain varmints in my 8-twist. I've also had good results from Berger 65 grain columns and 68 grain match FB. Just tried Barts Ultimate 65 grain BTs in anticipation of my 14-twist barrel. To give you an idea of the accuracy potential of the 80 grain Bergers, I put three in a 0.077 group on my sighter at a recent match - of course, the sighter isn't scored!!

Sorry about the brain fart, it is a 1:8 twist.

Freebore is your biggest concern, then. Just shoot whatever it likes and is suitable for your intentions. There are very few, if any bullets that will fail to make it to the target at 6br velocities in an 8 twist. Ideally, you'd like to be able to reach the lands with whatever you want to use, but in a varmint rifle, I doubt you'll see a great difference in accuracy, even jumping them. You'll still have to work up your best loads with whatever bullet you choose, but a .250 moa rifle seldom is a .250 moa rifle in the field, so shoot what gives good accuracy and is well suited for the job.

The good thing is that you have lots of versatility in an 8 twist. It'll shoot just about anything respectably. If you're trying to ring all it has out of it, accuracy wise, with a freebore that's set up for the heavies, you might try BIB 95 grain flat base bullets. They'll reach the lands in most barrels set up for the heavy boat tails, but still have a good amount of bullet in the neck.--Mike Ezell

I load 70 grain Sierra match bthp # 1505. Push it with H 322---BR-4--Lapua brass. I load it fairly stiff...as always start low and work up slowly.

95BT bullets will shoot as well as the 107's out of my rifle out to 1
400yds out of my 1-8. Never shot it any further than that so can't say beyond 400yds. :) WD
