How long a barrel for a straight 6BR?

I'm getting a new 6BR barrel put on an f-open rifle. My question is how long to make the barrel? Seems to me it can only take so much length to burn 30 grains of Varget or Reloader 15. Less than 28" will look goofy in my long stock. I'd like to go a little longer but wonder if it will gain any speed? What are your thoughts and experiences? Thanks

After 28 in you wont gain much. You can always put a hallowed tube on the end of it to make it look longer

QL give the distance down the barrel where 95 percent of velocity is got . I said 90 . The velocity keeps increasing . 30" or longer would be my choice . Larry

With very fast powders, yes i could agree with that. Remember though. Most matches are won with that extra 0.1%

26" is all you need. My last barrel for my Savage is 28" because it was in stock, I would have to wait 12 to 16 weeks for a 26". I have told my smiths in the past to leave the barrel as long as you can.

I ran a 34" on my last 6br and hitting 3100 with 105s wasn't a chore or hard on brass.

Two 6BR's cut with the same reamer by the same gunsmith. Both are Bartlein 5R 1-8, 28" HV and a 26" Remington Varmint contour.

30.8 RL15 behind 105 Berger Hybrids;

the 28" averaged 2918 ft/sec (20 shot string)
the 26" averaged 2853 ft/sec (10 shot string) over the Magentospeed on a recent outing.

They have held up well. I have 18 firings on this current lot and pockets are still tight.

My 6BR has a 28.5 inch barrel. The smith cut the barrel to insure that the powder would burn fully, the balance would not be way off and the rifle would make weight restrictions with all the other goodies in the build. As an added feature, he said I could get at least one set back out of it without screwing up things.

Pure simplicity. No fire forming. No guessing at dimensions. Put in 30 grains of powder. Seat a 105/107 and go shoot. Yes I am simple

I was a bit flippant so I'll try again. I'm already heavily invested in the 6BR in terms of equipment, supplies and knowledge. I don't have the skills, money, or time to be a be a long range champion, but I love shooting accurate rifles. For me the extra (maybe) 50-75 fps the Dasher would give isn't worth it.

I'm not disputing that extra effort generally brings extra reward, but I do see and hear of people spending lots of time on things that will not make a difference on target. Of course if all this effort gives them confidence, then it's probably worth it to them.

Or in this case a few inches of wind drift at 600 yards is all it gets you. There's no fleas on a straight BR at 600.
There's so little fps per inch gain on a 6BR just get the barrel you want and lop an inch off the muzzle. Anything from 27" to 30" won't perform all that different. Like you said the beauty of a straight 6BR is simplicity.
