How is too hot?

talking about barrel temperature after firing a bunch of rounds. i have always heard and go by the "its ok if you can hold the barrel for 10 seconds" this is probably a good starting point but does anyone how hot is too hot?

My personal rule of thumb is that when the outside of the barrel is a degree above warm, it's time to let it cool down.

Hate to give a wishy-washy "it depends" answer but...

I had one barrel, chambered .260 Rem) where the Point of Impact,POI) would definitely walk, spread out) with as little as a dozen rounds fired in short order.

On the other hand, my Pac-Nor 6BR recently got "quite hot" to the touch while sending a bunch of sighters down range very fast when my zero was way off after, stupidly) moving the scope back in the rings just before the match. With this "quite hot" tube, I then "went for record", shooting a 2.1" 5-shot group at 600 yards with about 1.5" of vertical.

In general, if the barrel gets more than warm to the touch I like to shut things down and let it cool.

Neconos.com sells temp strips you can attach to the barrel. These change colors at specific temps.
