Thanks! That is what I thought which is it was fired from a pretty long barrel. Shorter barrel 308 like an 18” one will only be able to attain that MV at much higher powder weight. With my 18” AR-10, an MV of 2550 was only attained at a powder weight of 44.5 grain of Varget using Lapua brass and Tula LRP.

Most folks find the accuracy load for the 308 around 2550 fps (military 308 match ammo is loaded to 2550 fps). You do not normally get max accuracy at max velocity

Are we talking the Mk318LR? I've read over the history of the 7.62X51 Long Range load development, and it's used several powders at several velocities.

I believe that it's loaded to 2550 because of damaged operating rods in gas guns fired in the hot climate of the middle east.

And God knows why they choose to run that RL15 which is ridiculously temp sensative compared to 4064 or Varget.

I was referring to the M118 and M852 military match ammo as having a muzzle velocity of 2550 fps and that would be out of the M14 21 3/4 inch barrel.

I think you are looking for clear-cut evidence that may not be there. For one thing, you may not have the seating depth the rifle likes. The temperature makes a big difference, at least in Texas. You might want to try moly coated SMK to reduce the pressures a bit. The chronograph data, POI, grouping are signs of a powder tolerant load or 'node'.

Also, check the torque on your action bolts. You could shake em loose and not know it. Something like the 'Firearm Accuracy Tool' or F.A.T. wrench for 10 to 65 inch pounds.
