How far would you hand ream when finishing a Chamber?

Yup, me too, placed 2nd in the Springfield and Garand match with them. Years ago a Marine corps armorer at perry was using a pull thru reamer to fit a new barrel to my dcm m14/state rifle. He told me the trick was to strip the bolt, try to close it, make a turn with light thumb pressure, clean, repeat. When the bolt finally just closes, clean, oil, and turn the reamer again this time with the bolt closed and pushing the rod in instead of pulling. Its always worked for me.
thanks for info in those 3 posts aka

I do a lot of garands and springfields with short chambered Criterion’s. Takes about 5 minutes to finish ream with a pull through, maybe less.

I have done a few CMP games match prepped Springfield’s with a regular piloted reamer using a reamer T handle. Just gotta be extra careful as it can quickly cut too far.
thats some good info Dr22. thanks

Well I guess the 5k arguments of dialing a barrel in to the half of a millionth while wearing a particular shirt with 1.00275 lenses on the safety glasses, and hair parted on the right side not the left can be put on the shelf now .

I think I will keep doing them the way I do.

Except for the “Part in the hair thing”. Ya gotta have hair to worry about that:)

for these two anyway thats true. I have thought about once i get them done of dialing in the chamber and checking the bore just to see but its not gonna change anything— its just a factory barrel!! ill see how they shoot but i expect to use these actions for other projects.

thanks for info on 4D jeff
Hoz- here is the thread where I used the uni-throater. Go Slow...

There aren’t many choices when a chamber has been mostly cut. The next reamer you stick in will follow that existing hole. You also get what you get, the final chamber is only as straight to the bore as the short chamber is / was
Yup

lol. no hair parts 4 me either.. dont you hand ream your barrels when they get close Jackie?
Yes. But keep in mind, I rough drill and then single point bore out the majority of the material With the compound set on the same taper as the reamer body.
All I use the reamer for is the final finish and dimensions of the chamber.

thanks for that info.. i have these short chambered barrels that dont need much to finish them off. its good to know you hand ream them.

yes i knew that-- shank not big enough to rechamber either. i almost didnt bother with them but they are new and bores look very good so ill give them a try-- thanks

If the reamer you use is razor sharp, it will be effortless and won't take long. If it's a rented reamer, that's cut 2 dozen chambers by 17 hobby 'smiths that were in a hurry, may take awhile. Because the short chambers are only 0.025" short, neck of the short chamber and neck on the reamer should be compared. You'd not want a chamber with a step in the neck, because the neck on the reamer was smaller than the neck in the short chamber.

l have two short chambered Rem 700 stainless barreled actions. both belted magnums-A 7mm RM and a 300 Win Magnum. they are short chambered about .020— Should i hand ream them to finish them off or set them up in the lathe and do it? i have hand reamed a chamber before but less than .005—I havent got the reamers yet either. i may rent them. Thanks
Just a word of caution renting reamers. I tried that twice. Both times were a disaster.

I guess perhaps I'm just 'lucky' that way. But I'll never consider doing that again.

Not going to mention the sources because there were 2 and I'm not interested in the ensuing 'urination' contests. But I'll buy my reamers going forward.

That's all I have to say about that.

i did wonder and have been a bit skeptical about the rented reamer experience. ive learned the hard way the old slog -we get what we pay for- is usually true. thats great info about the neck to. thanks much shortgrass

Thanks Dave—. i was skeptical to begin with on the rented reamers. I think I will do like you and buy some new ones even though the reamers will cost more than the barrels are worth. gives me incentive to chamber a few more chambers in these cartridges. KH
