How far would you hand ream when finishing a Chamber?

l have two short chambered Rem 700 stainless barreled actions. both belted magnums-A 7mm RM and a 300 Win Magnum. they are short chambered about .020— Should i hand ream them to finish them off or set them up in the lathe and do it? i have hand reamed a chamber before but less than .005—I havent got the reamers yet either. i may rent them. Thanks

.020" will take a little work but not much. What I wouldn't want to know is how bad out the chambers were. Trying to set them up may mess with your mind.
With that in mind set them up with running the treads in a steady rest and use the lathe to spin the barrel and hold the reamer in your hand. Quick and simple.
4+" of snow here in ENC. My dog has never seen snow before. He freaked out.

ok I hadnt thought about the dialing in problems that mite happen. they are factory barrels i forgot to mention and i know i wont be correcting any alignment ect issues of the chambers. Thanks for the advice on how to do this Dave. I heard about snow and cold down there. Im in IN - about same amount of snow 13 today was -5 yesterday. I hope the dog comes out OK. thanks again—- k hummel

Before I ever started machining barrels, I converted a 6br to 6bra using a reamer and a crescent wrench sitting in front of the TV with the barrel between my feet. That thing shot lights out too.
that sounds like quite a bit of metal removal. i guess i should try one by hand to see what it takes. Thanks 4 the info Urban. KH

I do a lot of garands and springfields with short chambered Criterion’s. Takes about 5 minutes to finish ream with a pull through, maybe less.

I have done a few CMP games match prepped Springfield’s with a regular piloted reamer using a reamer T handle. Just gotta be extra careful as it can quickly cut too far.

My 22BR Rem has a very skimpy chamber, and a .248 neck. I've been using a small base die for the body, but would love to increase the neck diameter to a "no turn" dimension. Sounds like that would be a pretty easy hand job with a reamer that fits the spec that I desire?? Is that correct? jd

Yup, me too, placed 2nd in the Springfield and Garand match with them. Years ago a Marine corps armorer at perry was using a pull thru reamer to fit a new barrel to my dcm m14/state rifle. He told me the trick was to strip the bolt, try to close it, make a turn with light thumb pressure, clean, repeat. When the bolt finally just closes, clean, oil, and turn the reamer again this time with the bolt closed and pushing the rod in instead of pulling. Its always worked for me.
