How does one loosen up the power ring on a scope ?

How does one loose up the power adjustment ring on a new or older scope for that matter ? This is for all brands of scopes. It seems it takes years of use to make power ring turn up or down a little easier ?
I don’t have much time in life to hunt and would like to make them more user friendly.... ha ha ha Thanks Marty

I tried the zip bands, and they slipped often. Bought some of the throw levers off of ebay and they work super, no slip and easy to install.

The turning tension or stiffness of the magnification ring is mostly a factor of the O-ring durometer. It could also be a lack of lubrication of that 0-ring. A numerically high durometer O-ring is harder than a low durometer ring, which is softer and offers less resistance to drag when turning.

On new scopes that are stiff........you must assume they are sufficiently lubricated so the required high turning force would be due to a high durometer O-ring which you can do nothing about. Just live with it or install a SwitchView lever.

If the ring has become hard to turn on an old scope, it may be from debris fouling the O-ring and/or a lack of lubrication.

I've used water to lightly flush debris out of the O-ring area while working the ring back and forth. Use some WD-40 afterwards to lube and displace water from the O-ring area as WD-40 will not swell the O-ring like some CLP type solvent/lubricants can.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER spray any lube or water with any force at the magnification ring gap which could force the fluid (or any debris present) passed the O-ring and into the interior of the scope.

I've fixed a couple of scopes using the above methods. Their mag rings had become very stiff due to a lot fine trail dust fouling the O-rings.
Colorado dry trail dust is like silt and finds its way into everything. Many hours of riding a four wheeler with the rifle slung on my back allowed the scope rings to get fouled.

I have a 30 year old scope that's always been heck to adjust the magnification is super hard to turn and never eased up a bit...

will try the switchview. thanks. I dont know why i did not think of that. getting old. Marty

Spend the extra money and get the 'folding lever' versions. The standard 'fixed lever' types stick out like a sore thumb and will get hung up on everything.........maybe even damaging the magnification ring if hit or pulled hard enough. You must be careful not to drag them when sliding the rifle in a soft case.
I must have 10-12 of the SwitchviewUSA levers and wish ALL of them were folders but they only came out with folders after I had purchased about 5-6 of the non-folders. You can get shorter than standard levers for the folding types which reduce their profile even more.
IMHO.............Don't even consider the polymer type lever rings. They are junk and way too big and bulky. I had three of them and threw them away after they were mounted.

Been running switchviews for years in 3 gun and PRS style matches and they have never caught on anything. Never damaged anything and I am not very careful. Where they are they are not in the way of anything.

BluestreakRem. Thanks for the tip. I did not know they made a fold down version. I will check them out Thursday.
I bought 2 of these plastics fishing reel hold on things from amazon.
Wasted my money. They might work for some but I am 60 years old not that strong in my hands anymore. could not get them tight enough on the scope ring dial. 16 year old football player next door could not either. Thanks. For the tip.

YES. Above picture is what i bought. Just did not work for me. 2 came in package from Amazon last week for my Vortex crossfire II scope. Neighbor kid and I could not make them work. ha ha ha. I think they are a little to smart for us , I do know both of us were not really strong enough to get them on tight enough to make them work. ha ha .
I think I paid 18.00 with postage of of Amazon. I would take 10.00 for both of them and pay postage. some one might have better luck. Marty

Really? They are not hard to put on at all. I have 3 on scopes. You just slide them over the power ring and tighten the knob. The excess comes out the top as you tighten and then you cut it off and done. No more tightening strength needed then putting the cap back on a soda and even if you did need more a pair of pliers would make short work of it. I am sure someone will buy them for $10 though.

Yep. I nor neigbor kid could not get them tight. Just did not work for me. Still have package they came in. Did not even attempt to try the 2nd one. Marty
