How does 6BR feed from repeating bolt action blind magazine?

I do not need the extra velocity that a 243 Win provides and would much rather have the longer barrel life than the extra velocity.


It is conceivable that I might use it for mid course F-Open but mostly it is just a fun build. I am more likely to use it for deer or coyote.

I have a 5R 1:7.5 barrel and a 3 Grove 1:7.7 barrel both in stainless both MTU/Savage profiles. Both in SS and 28".


How much work is it to get 6BR to feed in this application?

So I did take a look at the 6XC and it is a real powder hog. It might as well be a 243 Win which I have already setup for and have competed with and hunted with. Not at all what I want. It holds like 14gr. to 17gr. more powder than the 6BR. It only holds like 3gr.-4gr. less powder than the 243 Win.

I can understand the design elements that make it a fantastic cartridge for NRA High Power and PRS and other sports but it is just way more powder than I want to burn. Magazine length issues on many short actions combined with ELD/VLD bullets is a real problem if you did not look ahead and plan for this. The neck area is well thought out as is the overall length.


6mm barrel burners are addictive as I can attest since I ran 243Win and AI for decades. They are like that hot crazy girl friend you had that was a lot of fun but not good for you in the long run if you catch my meaning. They perform fantastic until they don't and they often just go South at the drop of a dime with little to no warning. This is especially true with stainless steel button rifled barrels. That is why I wanted to try the 6BR. I was hoping to flirt with the cute girl next door that is almost as much fun but not toxic and not likely to let you down hard!

I already have a gas gun in 6.5 Grendel maybe I will hold off on 6BR. Sure does look like a fun little cartridge for a bolt gun though.

Maybe I will get a shorter action to build off of. No sense making life difficult or setting yourself up to be frustrated! Just because you can do something does not mean you should.

I am going to be upset with myself on principal alone if I end up going the 6XC now that you guys have tempted me with forbidden fruit! LOL


I have a addiction history though with smart spirited women with size zero waist, red heads, Brandy, Bourbon, Wine, manual gear boxes, Ribeye steaks and 6mm barrel burners! I am trying to give up a few of these addictions! LOL I was hoping to make one of them 6mm barrel burners!

I will just stick to 6.5 Grendel and consider building a 6mm ARC. I will just do it in an AR platform. I mostly wanted this as a fun rifle, varmint rifle and had considered maybe taking it to a mid course F-Open match but will scratch the latter off the list!

I appreciate all the advice guys. I do not want to fight feeding any more than I half too for a gun that always mostly about just having a fun toy!

I just did a quick search and it appears 6XC brass is not a hydroform must. Nice to see it can be purchased already formed. Wonder if I can actual purchase any or if it is all back ordered? So this feeds better than 6BR in a bolt gun? I will have to look into it. I really want longer barrel life than what I get with a 243 Win. But I also want to feed from the blind magazine.

The 6XC, Version ONE ( Tubb Design ) .104 FreeBore, 1-7.5 or 1-8 Twist bbl's, using Norma Brass ( and most likely, Peterson Brass with, a touch less powder ) and Forster Dies, will feed flawlessly ( in Rem Short actions ) for repeat shots and is VERY Accurate with 80 to, 110 grain Bullets which Pretty much, will cover everything from, Targets to Varmints and Deer / Antelope. I havent tried 70 NBT's or, 75 V-Maxes,.. yet.
The 80 grain, Flat Base Bergers and 107 Sierra's MK's will go into,.. One Hole,.. .2's and .3's for Me.
AND,.. you can expect, better Barrel Life than, the .243 Win or, 6 MM Creedoor, also !
I did a serious amount of Research, before I chose, the 6 XC and have, ZERO Regrets !

Only way to know if it will work is to try. I have Borden Mountaineer SA with a cut down BDL follower and a 308 BDL box with a 223 spacer, BDL bottom metal. Works just fine.

Last I checked the 243 Win has little ballistic advantage over 6BR. The major difference is 6BR does almost everything 243 does but with several grains less powder (and recoil, and barrel burn)

My 6Br is also on a Sako AII. I'd always used it single shot, never tried the magazine until seeing your post. It works, shooting 58's and 65's. Wonderful.
 
I have three 6BR variants built on Sako 75s, hunting rigs. 30BR, 6BR and a 22BR, all of them feed flawlessly. I built them after reading an article here on the bulletin about a guy building a 6BR on a Sako 75, his results were excellent, no feeding problems. At the time there were quite a few less options for Remington 700s.

I shot out a Shilen barrel on a savage SA in 6BR, then went straight to XC because I was tired of pulling empty brass out of the action by hand. BR brass is too short and falls off the bolt before clearing the action. The XC is every bit as accurate as the BR and you don't need to modify the gun for it to work right! Best decision I ever made (besides my kids) ; )
