How do you make a Gong Ring? not wap clap etc.

Shooting 6.5 and .338 at long ranges (500-2000 yards) trying to get the AR500 10 inch to 24 inch to ring not pop, wap or clap when hit. I know it can be done. I've shot steel that had nice ring to it before but not at our range, at the time I didn't get a look on how it was mounted as it was way out there (1000 yards) across rough terrain. Any ideas? Thanks .... HB

They ring by vibration, think how a cymbal is mounted, from the middle. Even a gong (instrument) is not hung from the top, they typically have mounting 20%-25% down. Hanging from the top the entire thing moves and absorbs the energy rather than turn it into vibrations.

Usually they need to hang to ring. Hang from 2 chains, one on each side. If its not hanging, whatever has it fastened dampens the vibrations. You need all the vibrations to get a ring. Thinner plates ring better. My 1/2 inch ar500 doesn't ring as loud, it cranks. Has some ring when hanging though.

Thanks everyone for replies, I'm going to try a hard mount 25% down the steel this weekend.
Sounds somewhat like tuning a load for a node or a resonance thing..... HB

I agree that they need to be hung freely with a material that allows them to resonate. Chains would be better than fire hose or conveyor belting. Our hooks are AR500 and really let the gongs sing nicely. I also agree that thin & hard makes better noise. Meaning, if a 3/8” target will hold up, it’s going to sound better than the same target in 1/2”. It’s not uncommon to hear hits out to a mile when a big, hard target is hung freely & winds are favorable.

Probably has to do in how they are mounted to the stand.

Mine don't ring.
But when your making them from 1-1.5 inch thick AR400 scraps from making bulldozer blades & excavator buckets that's kinda expected.

Even hung by straps made from conveyor belt, still a "THWACK"!!
I bet a 1.5” thick piece is pretty portable! Send me one in a flat rate box- that would be even better than a box of bullets packed full
