how close should I expect chambering/throating to be

I have two Barnard S actions that I use for F/Tr. I supplied three dummy rounds to my smith. A year later, I send the second action and a new barrel, along with the same dummy rounds as before.

How close is is reasonable to expect headspace and throat length to be?

If you are using the same reamer the throat will be the same. Headspace should be within a couple thou., but if you use new brass for your new barrel, it ain't a problem. Fireform and adjust your die to it. A new barrel asks for new brass.

I'm not trying to hang anybody here- I'm merely curious.

Butch,

Out of curiosity, how close can you set up a throating reamer if you are working off of a dummy round? I've always just spec'd the chamber reamer to include the throating I want because I've not had any exposure to throating reamers.

I JUST talked to Neil Jones about this yesterday. He said that he has cut 2 of the same barrels with the same reamer and both chambers were different. My orig. question to him was " can I send you brass off my friends gun that is chambered with the same reamer I am going to be using on mine when my barrel get here?" I was looking to order some of his dies......Hope this helps...Rick

I use my reamers with the throat that I ordered. Now if I need to lengthen the throat, my throating reamer has micro adjustments on it. Put your throating reamer in your existing chamber. You can feel the reamer stop. Adjust your micro stop. Pull it out and make your adjustment with the micrometer stop. Now you are ready to go.

I guess I need to add this. Measure your dummy round at the ogive. Compare that to the ogive measurement of the existing round. The difference will tell you how much that you need to advance the throat.

As long as the tool you are using to measure your dummy round is the same tool you are using to measure the the chamber... you can be exact. Similar to what Butch says, the throating reamer I use for 7MM has micro adjustments and I use it just like he described. I've found the adjustments to be pretty precise once you get an initial datum to work from.
