How are the new Berger 109s working out?

I played around with the 109s in a 6BRX barrel that I have tuned 105hybrid, 106eps, and new pointed 107smks in. The initial results were very promising considering I loaded the bullet straight out of the box (no sorting). I historically sort and point my bullets for FTR, but wanted to see what I could get away with. I tried them at 1000 yds at two different ranges several months apart. Seem to see a similar behavior in that 9 of 10 will group well (esp in windy conditions), but 1 will come out of the group. Perhaps some sorting would cure that. Here are two targets. I will say the wind deflection was excellent even though I was not sending them hard. There is no doubt that shooter error is a possibility as I am not a great F-Open shooter.

We’re always looking for the something new out of Pandora’s Box, that will make a 9 a 10 on the target. I’ve never had consistent results with hybrids, although many have done very well with them. Once I started shooting a Dasher I tried them all, with mixed results, a shooter more astute then I said, “You want a bullet that’s accurate, consistent, easy to shoot, forgiving, shoot the 108 Berger”. I was tired testing every new fangled bullet, IMO wasting bullets, powder and barrel life. I did much better learning to read the wind in relation to what the 108’s can give me, and got repeatable results on the target. Might I lose a match because my 108 slipped into the 9 ring, whereas the 109 hybrid caught the 10? Maybe, but then I need to practice a little more...

I wonder if someone would enlighten why it shows .308 cal.? If you are given credit for a 308 die, verses .243....... some 10's maybe 9's...... jim

Yes Sir. That's the one I was referring to.

Thanks. Enough negative feedback here to make me want to try something else after these last couple hundred 109 run out.

Apples to oranges, but just for side note info, the 6.5 (not 6) 107smk is the only bullet I've found that turns my precision gas gun 6.5 Grendel into an actual precision gun.

I don't see anything negative, anymore people don't like to hear reality. They want everything sugar coated, what is precision to me and what is precision to you may be quite different ..... 10 shots in a measured 4" or less at 1000 seems precision....... 20 X clean in F class is precision...... jim

What 108 are you talking about? they make two...... I just sent for some of the newer ones and they are a very close BC to the 109. Plus they use the J4 jacket like the VLD hunting bullet..... jim

IF you're not shooting distance anymore, try going to a lighter, flat based bullet for more velocity and better precision. There are several out there that are good for 300 and under. I've been shooting 107's but recently switched to 88 gr with much better precision out of my four groove, 8 twist Brux.

I talked with @Stan Taylor on the phone the other day and the topic of the new Berger 109s came up. He said he tried them at long range in three barrels on his long range BR competition rifles. 1 in 8”, 1 in 7.5”, and a 1 in 7”. Didn’t have very good luck with them in anything he tried. That’s pretty thorough testing so the outlook on them isn’t too promising.

Im sure they will shoot accurately, just not as accurate as other match grade bullets that will keep you competitive.
