How accurate can a Savage prefit be?

Looking at possibly rechambering a 112 BVSS that I have that's currently a 25-06. Is there an advantage between the prefits, a gunsmithed barrel, and a gunsmithed shouldered barrel? Assuming a quality recoil lug/nut are both used on the first 2 options?

When I do another barrel for my LRPV I will do it shouldered. Then you don't have to spend the time setting the headspace each time. If you don't change barrels often then the prefits are fine and most shoot well.

I have a 222 I put together with a shouldered barrel and it looks a lot cleaner without the nut. Not planning on swapping barrels frequently so that aspect doesn't concern me.

I fitted Shilen prefits to three Savage target actions, here’s 5 shot groups at 100yds.
First rifles I ever built, I still can’t believe how well they shoot.

This 3 shot group was shot from a Shilen prefit, 22-250 , 8 twist, 80 g Berger VLD at 600 yds shot sitting on the ground using a Swagger bipod by my friend. He took coyotes in the last two years with the gun at 350-425yds.

Pretty dang accurate. I put a Shilen prefit on my son’s 12 BVSS and he shoots it in F/TR midrange. Just made High Master with it.

Shoots 90g VLDs in the 2’s at 100 yards with boring regularity

my f12 with a criterion barrel 108 bergers and 38.3 4350 cci br4 or 450 is a .2 or .3 when I'm not ol shaky and my concentration is spot on and a .1 every few months

The accuracy of a "pre-fit" is going to depend greatly on the mfg of the barrel...bore, chambering, threading , etc, just the same as custom work on a barrel blank. I agree with other contributors here regarding shoulder-cut barrels. For me, more convenient. However, I've seen some prefits along with fully completed blanks that were both tomato stakes.

I've had very good results with Shilen pre-fits on 6BRs.
I recently replaced a Shilen on a 223 that had 2500+ rounds through it with a Criterion pre-fit (same profile and twist). The "shot out" Shilen will shoot better than the new Criterion.
