Hot Rod 6mm.....which one?!?!

So I have an itch to build another gun. I'm sure you all understand lol......

I want some kind of hot rod 6mm.....shooting the 105-107 bullets in a 24" barrel weighing in around 10 pounds with scope to use for long range pronghorns, coyotes, steel targets and the occasional rock way out across a pasture.

6-284, 6XC, 6SLR, 6x47......or would a good 243 with good brass be sufficient??

I reload and what not so forming brass is a non-issue.

Lets hear some opinions as to what you are shooting, bullets and velocities and such.

I will be buying a barrel soon!

6 Remington or 6 Remington AI are underrated. Long neck and pretty accurate, wouldn't want it for a high volume rifle. 1:8 twist shoots the heavy bullets pretty well. Read article on here about Richard Franklin's 6 Rem AI

I've read about the 6AI. Sounds like a great round. I'd like to stick to a short action if possible though. I think a 6AI would require a long wouldn't it?

Well, I was in the same boat as you a few months ago. I went with the ultimate 6mm hotrod, overbore, barrel burner. The 6-284, and will be shooting the 105 gr bullets. I have no real life experience with it yet though, waiting for my barrel. If you can live with the poor barrel life. If the short barrel life is a big issue, then next would be the 6SLR or 6x47 lapua. Just my 2 cents.

For a real hotrod in a short action, it would be the 6-284. If you wanted to build a mean wildcat cartridge, you could try a 6 WSM. Barrel life would sure be pathetic, though.

Like some of the folks above said....gotta figure out what you are willing to put up with for the results.

My story, I was starting out in local competitions and wanted easy and reasonable , was scared of fire forming and didn't want a barrel burner. I went with a 6slr cause it fit me, cheap 243 brass easily formed in die...105s at 3000 ....shoots great and predictable at 1000 yds on down.... Has 2500 rounds down range and still competitive. It has given me a great education.

I'm jumping into another realm for me. Something I have to fire form...6 fat rat. I don't expect it to shoot with my slr, but it looked like a fun round to play with on some of my regular games (105s at 2750ish) and certainly should take me to another level of knowledge.

There are so many cool setups out there, that I don't envy your decision. If I didn't have these two, I guess, I would be looking real hard at the 6CM, or the 6XC. The 6dasher really looks cool if you don't mind the fire forming process.

Good Luck

243imp 1/8 twist will do wonders w/105gr bergers I have 2 and they are bad!
one on REM 700 one on a HOWA 1500 SELECT MATCH SHILEN BARRELS.

All good replies!

I'm thinking the 6xc or the 6slr is what I'm leaning towards.

I really don't care about barrel life so the 6-284 is also in there.

6SLR brass easy to make? What is the process?

6xcshooter, he said he doesn't want a long action.

xswanted, I have three 6mm's - 6XC, 6SLR, and 243AI. My favorites are the 6XC and 6SLR. For the 6XC, I buy Norma brass. And for the 6SLR, I buy regular 243 brass and run them thru a 6XC die screwed out .122" - at that point they are 99% formed and ready to shoot.
BTW, the 6SLR is basically a 6XC on steroids.

Edit: If you aren't comfortable screwing out a 6XC die, you can buy 6SLR dies here http://www.6mmar.com/Super_LR.html

If you don't care about barrel life, than nothing can touch the 3500 fps, 105gr bullet of the 6-284. As far as the process of making brass with the 6slr, just run .243win brass in the 6slr die. Done.

Here are 5 cases that have built and shot over the last 6-7 years. From the left is 6mm Dasher, 6XC Improved, 243 Long Neck Improved, 243 Improved, 6mm rem Improved. The 243 Long neck started out as a regular 243 case, and pushed the shoulder back, then fireformed (big pain) Kiff did the reamer. After years of screwing around with all these 6mm's, I did several dashers and will stay with them.

Also the 6-284 Shehane has about 1.5 grs capacity than std 6-284 I think it is the ultimate as an over 1000 yd Prarie Dog Rifle!

I've got a 6 creedmoor, LOVE IT! Shoots the 105 hybrids at 3150+. No brass forming needed, plus the hornday brass I received from GAP is right on par with my lapua brass. I'm expecting 2000 rounds at leasing on this one.

the 6mm Creedmoor is getting to be very popular recently. it is almost identical to a 6XC but those who use them claim they will do things the 6XC only dreams of. ANYWAY........if you must stay in a short action and want all the poop you can get, the .243AI will have the most horsepower and shoot pretty good. you will still have to modify the receiver to either accept an oversize wyatts mag box or notch the front to use modified AICS mags. if you just want great performance and want a reliable repeater, the 6XC, 6 Creedmoor, or 6x47 lapua are all good. I prefer the 6XC......"the original and still the best"! wasn't that a commercial long ago????

A "Hot Rod 6mm" has to be bigger that a 243. Hot rod in my understanding is flat shooting damn the barrel. Go with the 6mm/06. ;D
