Hornady brass, any good?

The article seems to point back to the Accuate Shooter site. I couldn't find a definitive date on the Accurate Shooter page, which I have always found a bit annoying. I suspect the reason may be that each page gets updated when they get new data to add.
Ron, all the way at the bottom of the original accurate shooter page under the paypal logo is the copyright date, 2007.

Help me out here. It's good brass but you had to full length size it to chamber? And you can't find Winchester or Remington brass in .223? Run up the road to Cabela's in Hamburg. If it's anything like the Cabela's here in Delaware, there are enough bags of .223 in those and other makes to pull down the brass rack.

The two 50 piece bags I purchased were a little over sized. Like I said, I full size all new cases anyway I was just surprise to find new cases over sized since I never encountered that before.

When I checked, last winter Cabela's in Hamburg did not have any Remington or Winchester brass in 223. The local gun shop had the Hornady so I tried it based on the recommendation a fellow shooter.

I'm not a bench rest shooter but I do require a high degree of quality in my reload since I hunt ghogs and predators extensively and long range shooting is involved. I'm up to 12 reload and I haven't noticed any difference in performance from Remington or Winchester. I'm not asserting that it's "Good", just that it worked fine for me so far.

Ledd, dig a little deeper, data from the origin is http://www.6mmbr.com/223Rem.html copyright 2007. 2012 is the reprint. Tipoff is Lake City '06 brass. The article and brass data is over nine years old.

couple edits to correct dates but stand by the fact that this is old data.

Oh I see. Did not know that. Just reading the thread, it looked like the data was from 2012 so I was a little confused on how that equation worked? Lol. Thanks for clearing that up.

I agree that 10 year old data is ancient history with how fast the precision rifle world is moving these days

I got some for my factory 243 about 5 years ago when there wasn't much available and I can tell you it is not very good. It was very thin and did not hold up well to numerous firings. Just my personal experience.

I saw that, but what does it mean? Was that when they created that page, the whole site, or that specific part of the article on the page? I detest sites that do not date their work. Most sites will show at least when the page was updated last.

The survey on who uses what brass is much more recent. I believe from 2015. It was the weights of the .223 brass data that has a questionable date.

You know what's even worse than Hornady brass?...Hornady reloading dies!
If you are talking about the ones pre zip spindle I totally agree. I have 6.5 and 6 Creedmoor Hornady dies and they are both more than acceptable. Testing proves they are doing a great job with correctly sizing the necks, they are able to adjust to bump shoulders to my specs and the seating die has a floating sleeve that provide concentricity that meets of exceeds my needs (.001-.002 total runout). The zip spindle, unlike the older spindle design, stays in place.
Do I choose Hornady dies for every task? Absolutely not. But they are, in their present state, most acceptable.

I would use plain old standard RCBS dies over a Hornady die set any day. I've had Hornady dies and they made accurate enough ammo, but the design is terrible. Hated the zip spindle that would pull loose from time to time due to the FL sizer reducing my necks way too far before pulling it through the expander ball. Work hardened the hell out of my brass. Hated how the seater does not support the case body and the plunger doesn't even have a spring. Easy to jamb up a case neck if youre not paying close attention. I will never own another set of Hornady dies for as long as I live.

Hornady copied the horrible zip spindle design from LEE, which are still probably better dies than Hornady. All other top level dies like Whidden, Redding Type S, Forster Benchrest, RCBS Gold Medal, and Wilson fully support the case and bullet in alignment before seating begins.

Anyhow, that's off subject for this thread so rant over

I suppose it doesn't matter. If Hornady brass is creating winning ammo, then so be it. I have some really accurate rifles where I use Remington brass (6mm Remington and 6.5 Rem Mag). I have to prep the holy living hell out of every part of the junky Remington brass, but in the end, it makes very accurate ammo. I'm sure the same can be accomplished with Hornady or any other cheaper brass

I preppred my Hornady Brass. It was new unfired. I full sized, deburred the flash hole, uniformed the primer pockets, trimmed, and chamfered. It shot fine and I didn't experience any malfunctions or loss in group size. As I said in the previous, I'm up to 12 reloads in my 223 bolt rife. No problems.
