Hornady A-tips for hunting

I don't necessarily disagree with that but using Berger as the example they were called "target" bullets for years until more and more people were using them for hunting bullets and found out they were very effective as one.
It is my impression is that there.is a differene between Berger Hunting and Target bullets.. The animal deserves that you make your best effort to find the most humane chioce

I was referring to long before Berger ever came out with their "Hunting" line of bullets. I know many that have put down countless with Berger's Hybrid Target line though too.

Hornady's ELD-M line of bullets is listed as a target bullet but they seem to do a pretty good job of killing stuff. In fact the ELD-M's do such a good job of killing animals the owner of Rokslide calls them ELD-Murder

I’ve seen the ELDMs in action, not by me but I have a friend who uses them with great success. I’ve used a Berger VLD 180gr hunting bullet for years out of my 7 Saum, I’ve also used the 180 hybrid, both are deadly.

Bullet performance at long range is a different animal than shooting 3-400 yards and in. If I knew all my shots would be within 400 I’d use partitions, CorLokts and TSXs and be happy but when your getting out past that then I go a different route.

These A-Tips seem more like a target bullet and I was curious if anyone had used them on game but it’s seems like there’s more negative reports than positive. Which is ok, they will be fun to shoot steel and objects just having fun. They were given to me so the price was right. One thing that impressive about them is the packaging, sheesh!

Thanks again for the input guys!

I was referring to shots less than 400yds on all types of big game from deer to cape buffalo. You guys have used them and I haven't so I defer to you.

I've killed a good many whitetail deer with 110gr A-Tip bullets. Over penetration definitely hasn't been a problem. The A-Tip and ELD-M are better hunting bullets than the ELD-X in 6mm.
Target shooters use more bullets than hunters, I see no reason why a manufacturer would label excellent target bullets as hunting bullets.

3 hogs and one mouflon ram with 7mm 166 Atips and no complaints yet. 2 of the hogs were over 400 yards. Not claiming them to be the best, just a statement of what I have seen. The 88gr .224 ELD-M was also used on a nice axis buck. Turned the insides to mush.

88 ELD-M on coyotes and bobcat were not impressive. Too many factors at play with all of the scenarios involved. If you want to shoot hunting bullets then by all means do so. Seems like I have had failures on nearly every bullet I have tried at times. I have had berger hunting and barnes both pencil through on what should have been very high impact velocities in the vitals. If you are shooting close and uncertain angles on game size partitions and Aframes would be my go to.

I did mill a .25cal 134 ELD-M and a 138 Atip last week to see whats inside. I was planning on using Atips but there is virtually no void under the tip. The ELD-M I can almost promise will be expanding, probably over expanding more so. Walking back my Atip plan and will use ELD-M as I wont be elk hunting with this rifle. Doesnt mean the Atip wont be fine but it put enough questions in my head to change my plan.

Have you sectioned a bullet to see it's construction?
On another note...
My BIL dumps deer with the 147 eldm in his 6.5cm, and has taken multiple animals with a .30cal 155gr lapua scenar.
Im still stuck on feral hogs testing

I think some of the match bullets aren't marketed for hunting is probably due to government contracts and not being able to use expanding bullets because of nato. If they are not marketed or officially tested for expansion then they can probably use them in combat.

I use nothin but match bullets for hunting, but not the a tips. A very close friend said the 6mm was fine on pronghorn but that he had trouble with the 6.5 and 7mm, which was all his personal experience and mirrors everything in this thread.

I’d sell those A-Tips and buy twice as many Berger hybrids!
