hornady 105 A-MAX

I was just wondering if any of you guys have used the 105 in your 6mm br. here in australia they are about $10 cheaper then the 107 sierra's. being that iam an apprentice thats a big difference to me.People over here in OZ have told me that they are no good. But they seem to shoot alright in my rifle, my smallest group was with 29.9 of varget to give me a 3 shot group of around .127 against the sierra with a group of .177 and the only load that works with the sierra is 28.5 which i think is a little light on. Today I shot the 6mm at 900 yards the last 4 shots I didnt touch the sights and put them into a group of around 3 inches. any info about the 105's would e much appreciated.

thanks,
mitchell

I use the 105 Amax in my Ram-Pro actioned 6br a lot, and they shoot tighter in that gun than the 107 SMK's ever did.
I use the PMC Russian mag primers and 30.3 of Varget with them.
Any one who says they are no good never shot them much.
They will do a number on varmints too.
I jump them about .023 off the rifling, they didnt seem to like to be close.

I shoot the 105 Amax in by 6mm br as well for varmint shooting. They do very well at 400 and 500 yds and they really smack the little critters down. I'm using 31 grs of Varget with CCI 450's,this is a max load so try 10% less in your rifle and work up) in my savage actioned 6br 8 twist 28" barrel.

World record,1000Yd)was set last year with a standard 6mmbr and 105 Amax bullets. Group was just over 4". I believe the record has since been broken.

I am one that doesn't listen to others and have to try everything for myself. If they work use them, who cares if someone says they don't. I use them in my Savage for shooting long range dogs and for windy days.

I shoot a case like the XC. Last month at F-Class shoot,600 yards)shoot a 80 round match, score was 800 68X's. this month 60 round match, score was 599 44x. So A-Max's shooting good for me. A-Max's normally shoot best 15 to 25 off lands.

I know this conversation is about the 6 mm 105 gr Amax, but I just want to add an observation about Amax and jump.

I used to shoot .224" 75 Amax .01" off the lands and had lots of off call shots and generally poor results at 600 yards, struggling to break 190. I jammed them .01" in and had much better results. Best to date has been 196-7X. That's with an AR-15 service rifle.

Berger 80 VLDs shoot even better jammed in, so I have switched to them for 600 yard work. But I still keep my 75 Amax leftovers in case I run out of Bergers and can't get more in time.

Gday Mitchell,

Ive heard both good and bad with the amax but at the same time the smk as well. The amax generally gets refered to as the varmint bullet of choice and the smk as a match round, maybe its just to justify the cost difference maybe? Either way i am waiting on my 6br from Shane Clancy which when i get all the bits together will be testing both the amax and smk but may even look at the nosler bt and the seirra game king for something different.

Either way if it shoots why pay extra, i know a bloke that uses cheap crap reloading gear and components and generally shoots groups similair to my stuff which i like to think i take a bit of care with not to mention spend a few $ on!

By the way whats the specs on the rifle???

How ya going dave?

I was wondering where you are. I cant fault the work from shane, I have seen about 5 rifles built by him and they are all tack drivers. My rifle is built on a rem 700 action trued with a 28 inch lilja 3 groove in 1 in 8 twist I opted for a .270 neck just so the necks get cleaned up and all the lumps and bumps removed. I have and aussie laminate stock in the MBR profile. the trigger is the standard rem one set about 2 pounds. some options you could get is an aftermarket trigger like the rifle basix or shilen and the sillica carbon spring and aluminium fireing pin to decrease lock time. My reloads are LAPUA brass neck turned to give a loaded round diametre of .268, 105 A-MAX loaded to just touch the rifling, 29.9 of AR2208 and the federal small rifle primer. I use the reddin g comp die set with a .265 neck bush.

I am very interested to se how you rifle will shoot, drop us a line any time if you need any help.

see ya,

mitchell

To be honest I tried them one time and right out of the gate at 600 yds I shot a group that went 1.160 in testing on 4 different groups the largest hovered right around 2.5"

That same day I shot some 108 BIBs and they shot 3/4'-7/8" so needless to say I stayed with them unitl I lost one in a match and then went back to my load i had using the Bergers.
I have been wanting to retest the A-max and will just hadn't gotten to it.

However In my last match i shot the 80 grn a-max in my 22 Dasher and shot 4 targets with 4 different loads in load developing and won HG group agg using them.
They shot well enough I'm testing them again this weekend but am not going to play with seating depth and fine tune it and stay with it for time being.

Hornady is really trying hard to make them more consistent and have changed alot of things in doing so. Use to from lot to lot you never knew what they would do some would shoot some were totally junk. I'm speaking of the 140's in a 6.5 caliber now.

One thing we can't do is make a barrel like a particular bullet you have to shoot what it likes.

Hey Mitchell,

Yeah i cant wait for it all to come together, i have some great spots for some long range rabbit shooting anywhere between the 200yd and 600yd mark so im dying to get it into action. As its a bit of a cheapie it will be a varmint rifle more than anything but will give me my first crack at real long range bench shooting so should be fun.

Cheers
Dave
