Hoppe's #9

Is the new stuff as good as the old stuff before they changed the formula ?
The old stuff wasn't very good. A long time ago, that's almost all that one had. There are much better bore cleaners out there now. I bought a huge bottle a year or two ago that I found at a ridiculous price. I am going to use it for cleaning out M14 clone gas systems and maybe rimfire bores.

Still using a jug I bought maybe 35 yrs ago, I use it for initial clean, with a coupleof patches and then a brush, then a few patches of Sweet's, then clean the Sweet's out with Hoppes again and leave it "damp" with Hoppes in the safe. Tried a few different cleaners, Wipe Out, Robla Solo, some others, didn't take anything else out that the Hoppe's/Sweet's didn't, so, stuck to what I was doing, Sweet's is a bit stinky, but, world won't come to an end over it, used worse for other things.

sweets is a super amonia concentrate. I have some if I get an abnormal amount of coppering, but I haven't had that happen in years to a good benchrest quality lapped barrel from any maker if I keep to a routine of cleaning after every IBS match...usually 60 shots or so average.

I just rechecked and I have 2 bottles, a 32oz and a 2oz that says Gibsons and is marked $1.70. That was the old Gibson's Discount stores.
When our local gipsons closed they had 600s for $69.95. My mom couldn't see why that was a good investment tho. I only know if one store still open, and it's in Kerrville Texas

Several years ago I bought a Suhl rifle and Eley ammo from Herb Gibson. He was old man Gibson's son. He said they were better off renting their places out than operating all the stores. Herb was very involved with Dallas Christian School where 2 of my Grandsons attended.

STORY: Many years ago I was in a hotel and could smell Hoppe's. Tracked down the room with my nose and met a target shooter who was there for a match. Had a great talk and looked at a really nice M1A.

The only thing you get to take with you are your memories.
