Homemade CLP or Bore Cleaner

Does anyone know a recipe for making homemade bore cleaner or CLP, I’m not looking for anything super strong but something I can fill an old oil can with. I do lots of gun cleaning for the family and my collection is always well oiled. I tend to go through CLP or Rem Oil pretty fast

I was thinking some type of simple green and mineral spirits to clean bores with? I have just about every chemical available in the garage. Would brake cleaner mixed with something make a good cleaner too?

I heard of Ed’s Red but think the acetone might be a little agreessive in some of my regular shooters. Might work good for a rusty bore though.

I’m open to any suggestions. I pretty much have everything available in the garage form WD-40 to garage door grease.

That’s the old can id like to fill.

Simple Green is the cats meow in flintlocks. I tried it once in a center fire did not do much. I think you can buy gallons of Hoppes 9, dump a can of Kroil in and your good to go especially if your will to let the bores soak in it. Then a patch or 2 of Sweets as needed and your good. I patch of a light rust resistant oil. Done

You think it would work for black powder cartridges? Friends Vetterli I’m working on has a rusty bore, rifling is good though. I even tried GI bore cleaner on it and still couldn’t get the rust out!

Manufacturers pay their chemists good money to develop safe and effective gun cleaning products. Get your family members to pony up more money to keep you well supplied with CLP.
There is a lot of truth to that. I tried some brake cleaner on my friends Vetterli with a rusty bore just now. I’d say it’s as powerful as Ballistol. It’s a good rust remover and powder fouling remover though.

simple green worked as expected, I’ll use that stuff for removing corrosive salts. I oiled the bore and all parts really well after cleaning, With Montana extreme gun oil and rem oil.

While I’m not so sure that I would put ATF down my rifle barrels. I have used ATF down many Abrams main gun tubes without any issues. It amazes me how I spend $$$$$ for all of the “wonder” carbon and copper removers, when I might have all that one would need in my garage.

That’s exactly why I want to do this experiment. A cheaper alternative to some of the off the self cleaners is what I’m after. Brake cleaner so far is really good at removing rust.
